New Boerboel Pup from DK Boerboels

We just got home with our new guy, Buck. Got him from Dave Harris. Sire is DK Bruiser. Dave spent several hours with us showing us all his dogs, all of which were beautiful and unique. We are took a tour of his cattle farm in his Kawasaki Mule which Bruiser ran along side.

Congratulations! Do you have pics of him to post?

Having trouble w attaching pic from my phone. I'm wondering if my iPhone4 is too old. Buck is 12 weeks and 35#'s. Definitely smaller than his brother who's built just like his dad but we think Buck is awfully cute and sweet. He'll hold fairly still until it's picture time. I tried manage attachments but wasn't able to get it to work. Sorry not too tech savvy. Guess I need help on posting pictures. Thanks. Russell.

I'm really sorry but I think it's a phone issue. I've never upgraded my phone. I'll email pictures to myself and open them on the computer and try to upload from an actual computer. When I do the above the box to select or choose file is not highlighted so it doesn't allow me to select any photos from my phone directly. He's doing great my 3 1/2 year old daughter and he are in love. She has taken him out every hour to go to the bathroom usually by herself. We are on 20 acres so no one is close by and if we don't go out we watch from the window. I send a picture w them tomorrow. Hopefully.

Wow he has lots of muscle already. I have not seen many DKH dogs and I have been very curious about their build because his foundation dogs were mostly Mizpah.

WOW! He's a gorgeous pup and looks like he's going to be a big boy!

Thanks. His brother was bigger and wider. His dad Bruiser is as wide as he is tall and able to run all over following the Yamaha Gator as we toured Dave's place seeing his cattle etc. We (my wife) have (has) a sheep farm. The sheep are protected by our LGD (Akbash) but he obviously is with the sheep full-time. Keeps all four legged predators away but my wife has strangers who come to purchase and pick up sheep when I'm not around and wants a dog who is able and willing to protect her and the girls should the need arise. We are not sure the LGD would. We also wanted the protection dog to have a low prey drive and to be great with kids. We couldn't be more pleased then we are with the BB. My only impatience is going to be waiting for him to grow. Not trying to get the animal rights activists worked up but my wife has suggested raising rabbits to be able to feed the dogs a raw diet. She has me half convinced. Any thoughts on this. At what age is it appropriate to start a raw diet? Thanks and I love the knowledge base on this site. Also, Mike thanks again for helping me find Dave. For the non BB people, I've learned he was one of the very first to bring BB's to the US. I think it was around 1983. He also is a guy who definitely uses his dogs for their originally intended purpose as farm dogs, which is what boerboel literally means.

Rabbits are a good source of meat, as is any other butchering that you might do. I doubt you will ever throw away any meat ever again. When to start RAW? Now is good. You also might want to get some Diatomaceous Earth as part of your daily feeding if you are going to feed straight from live. The DE will stave off any worms or parasites the bunny may contract. If you have a good sized flock you may want to do a monthly butcher just for the dogs. I am not sure if you can feed an LGD off his flock, that could present an issue. My BB don't have a high prey drive but the have some, and Jade is obsessed with gophers (her favorite food). I saw DH's post regarding prey drive in the Boerboel and I totally agree. You do not need that sort of drive in a farm protection dog. Just a willingness to guard and protect.

Oh and you will not need to wait for him to grow. Just feed him normal and if he wants more adjust his meals but watch for chunkiness. If he starts to get pudgy reduce his portion. It's better if he runs thin while he is growing. Pups that start thick and heavy tend to have joint issues and it's not even later on that the problems arise. He will grow so fast you can watch it happen.

Mike, you are mist definitely the go to guy for Boerboels etc. That was a lot of very helpful info. We would plan to "euthanize" the rabbits and skin them and then feed them raw. We also have chickens which we could do the same with and although we eat our own Shetland ram lambs which are grass fed and chemical free as is everything on the "hobby farm", Mary mentioned we can have our old ewes turned to meat and bone meal. Also eggs from the free range chickens.

Do we need to worry about parasites with the dead but raw meat. Is it better to freeze it and thaw it?

We've all enjoyed Buck a bunch.

Thanks. He is blending in beautifully with our family already. My wife keeps saying she thinks my research really paid off and she thinks he is the perfect dog. I'd highly recommend Dave Harris Kennels from KS. One of the first importers of these dogs to the US. He cares a lot about the personality of these dogs. He has 2 incredible and extremely athletic brindle males that I think he said were around 2 which he hasn't used yet for breeding because he said it takes longer to see what they will really be like overall. Just sharing this because he really cares about the dogs he produces and how he pairs them up for breeding. I got turned onto Dave from Mike on here who is the BB expert on this site. Wish you well as you work through whether to add a BB or not. What do you have now? Males or females. Are you thinking of adding a male or female puppy?

Wow he is stout. We're thinking of a bb as an addition to our family. What a fine specimen. He's gorgeous

we have a male English mastiff mix whose 5 months now. I wouldn't be getting a puppy for about a year or two.

We were actually looking into beorboels as our first pup but my bf has never had a molosser breed or anything other then a shitzu. So I wanted to get him a more manageable breed first off. I've had big dogs all my life.

We live in missouri so kansas isn't too far. Does he have a site or fb page?

Freezing is always the best thing you can do. But not everyone freezes deep enough, 0F or below for at least a week. Wild pork they say to freeze longer. Also salmon or salmonoid fish (trout) should also be put in a deep freeze for a week to a month before feeding to a dog. I also read a few articles that said you can feed eggs pretty much as often as you like as long as you don't separate the white from the yoke, and whole egg shell and all is best.

You might try feeding the rabbit skin on as well. This is a natural way of feeding and provides roughage for the digestive tract.
