Proud of my boy

Max is my soul dog. I think some of you understand. My bond with him is unlike anything I've experienced with a dog. He started off itty-bitty and sickly. He spent the entire summer being crated/limited activity. He deals with his bratty bro Bo barking all the time. He loves unconditionally. He's learning a lot. Overcoming fear of noises and movement. My aspirations are for him to do fur therapy. After today, I know he can do it!

We went to visit my my father-in-law who has end stage MS. He is chair/bed bound and has limited use of only one arm. Today Max went along for the visit when my husband shaves him and cuts his nails and helps his mom move him around. Max was a little apprehensive at first, but warmed up nicely. He hasn't been for a few months and I don't think he remembered him.

Scott lit up and really smiled and even spoke in a loud enough voice to call Max to him. He usually mumbles and it's hard to understand him. Max went near the scooter, bed, electric recliner and when we moved Scott with the hoyer lift, Max stayed calm. He barked a few times and made a little grumble noise when my husband cut his toenails though. He quickly relaxed and stopped. He was calm enough to lay by the chair, visit, wag and let Scott pat him on the nose a few times.

I think this was pretty good for the first time being around all the medical equipment in a new environment with 2 cats locked in the bathroom. I think with continued exposure and ongoing training, we should be able to get there! Ultimately, I'd like to take him to a women's rehab center they are building near me and also to the local nursing homes. Feeling pretty good about my boy right now.

This is really in the wrong spot. Not sure how that happened. Anyone know how to move a post?

I'm sorry to hear about your FIL. What a great story of how a pup can bring light into a person's world that can be very dark. Great job, Max! Kudos to your husband taking care of his dad. :)

How great of Max to be such a good boy. It's amazing how they know and can sense when to be calm. Sorry to hear about your FIL. Hopefully Max can visit more often!

My mother in law cares for him in the home and is in her early 70's. She accepts very little help from anyone. I think it's a dignity thing for him. Max and I plan to visit weekly moving forward.

He's a nut. My step-daughter has had the flu and has spent four days and nights in the family room on the couch. That's where most of Max's stuff is. His crate, toys, bones, and soft beds. I worked and my husband was home but left her alone to watch tv and sleep. She said every time she'd wake up, Max had piled all his stuffies, bones and even a towel (slobber rag) on top of her and the couch. And he was sitting there staring at her. He's a good nurse too.

Awe, Max is such a good boy! Dogs really can sense when there is someone who could really use them for silent support and comfort.
