Pyrenean Mastiff

We almost got one when people in another state had one which they couldn't afford. They told us when they grow up they are like big teddy bears in both size and temperament. The only reason we didn't get it was because we wanted a younger puppy at the time.

Would you happen to know from what breeder the other people got their Pyrenean Mastiff from?

Did you meet the dog at all? If you did, could you tell me what you thought about him/her?

I never did see the dog in person. All the people told us was they are big teddy bears and love their family so much. The only reason they were giving him up is because they couldn't afford to take care of a dog this big.

This is the breeder:

You are the best!!! That is the same breeder I have been talking with about potentially getting a pup from and I have been trying to figure out how to find people who have gotten one from them.

Would be at all possible for you to maybe forward my e-mail to them so I can get their feed-back on the dog? I just want to make sure that the dogs they breed are of sound temperament, healthy and so forth.
Also because I am in Canada so I would not be able to go directly to the kennels to check everything out myself.

Unfortunately, I don't have the contact info for the people who had the pup any longer.

I do know that they loved the dog very much and thought he was the best except for his size and their income not allowing them to take care of such a large breed. They had done a lot of research also before getting him. I wish I could help more.

I'm very late to this thread, but I just wanted to say that I have visited Tierra Alta Kennel and met the breeder of their wonderful dogs. I cannot say enough good things about Tierra Alta, Karin, and Karin's dogs. The facility is very well designed and constructed for the comfort and security of these large endearing beasts. The care that all Karin's dogs receive is exemplary. The PMs themselves are sweet, outgoing, and drop-dead gorgeous! Tierra Alta's breeding plans and the gathering of excellent dogs from a wide range of different European breeders reflects a thoughtful and serious approach.

Yes, I'm a fan, and I don't even have a PM yet.

I thought I'd update this thread since I am new here. :)
Karin no longer raises Spanish Mastiffs, FYI.
I raise Pyrenean and Spanish Mastiffs on a small ranch in N. Nevada. All of my dogs have been imported over from Europe. Presently I have four PM's - two from the Czech Republic and two from Italy. I presently have nine Spanish Mastiffs, all brought over from Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

I just placed my first PM litter born in March. Unlike Karin, my dogs are ranch raised and put into livestock when about 3 weeks old and never kenneled hence I give strong preference to them going to working homes where LGD's (Livestock Guardian Dogs) are needed to protect stock. I can't say enough about the breed. The PM is a wonderful dog, affable, protective, confident and beautiful. They EAT ALOT so if you are on a tight budget this probably isn't the breed for you!

You can see photos of my dogs here: www.lgdnevada.com BTW, the breeders in CT no longer breed them nor does the person in OR. At this time Karin in CA and myself are the only PM breeders in the US.

Lol :p Apperently when you breed a Pyrenees with a mastiff you get what seems to be an approximation of a Saint Bernard lol :p very cute dogs, I checked out the website and they seem lovely.

No.......:(
May I suggest that you go to the LINKS page on my website www.lgdnevada.com where you will find a section of links to informational pages and sites on the Pyrenean Mastiff.
The PM is not a cross between a Great Pyrenees and a Mastiff.
If you read a little more, you'll find out the real history behind this wonderful breed.

Thanks, Brenda

I have been so busy and not on here for a long time. I wanted to let you all know my PM bitch Sally whelped 9 pups today, 5 males, 4 females. :) Mamma and babies are doing fine.....I have several reservations already, but not all are spoken for yet, and I prefer they go to good working homes with livestock.

Here's a photo, they are still wet from birth here.....this is my "B" litter and only the second litter of PM's to be born in Nevada (I also whelped the first). The more the word gets out about these smart and affable dogs, I think the more they will become popular.

Beautiful dogs and beautiful puppies. I was wondering why you do the LGD crosses? Is there a trait you are trying to get? From your site, I can tell the dogs are working dogs so I was just wondering if you were trying to achieve a specific working trait.

A co worker of mine has 2. We are insurance geeks but he also has a sheep farm. His are real working dogs and live w/ the sheep ouside and in the barn. His dogs guard the flock and chase off foxes ,coyotes and the occasional bear. I have only seen them once and they were impressive !!! From all his stories and accounts, they are very docile and calm until called into action. He pokes at me all the time and states he has the "True French Mastiff " , as I have a couch potato Bordeaux.

On many farms and ranches you will usually find as many if not more crossbred LGD's working as purebreds. My crosses have been highly successful combining traits from two or more breeds to produce really good working dogs. Also, the hybrid vigor can mean a healthier dog.

Thanks for the answer. I saw that you focus on working dogs and rarely sell to pet homes from another post and it makes sense. I know there are amazing crossbreeds and it is great to see thought put into the crossings instead of the "hey, doodles sell don't they" that seem rampant where I am. :)
