Question on types of Raw Meat

Hey guys,

So we hunt here in WY and have lots of Deer meat for the dogs. I wanted to know if any one has had issues with it. (IE worms). We haven't and we feed our adult dogs it, half raw meat half kibble.

We have our 12 week old Fila that we want to put strictly on all raw. So, we would feed him raw deer meat. We mix in the organ meat (heart, lungs, everything..)

A lot of people (who don't have dogs or feed raw) have said to never feed deer.. and I don't agree. Just want to know if anyone who does feed raw has had problems or knows of anything we don't.

(We deworm regularly for regular worms and heart worm)

I don't keep the lungs but regularly give my Filas liver from every deer and elk we harvest. As we finishing up processing of the meat we give them trimmings too. I always ease the liver into their diet to avoid any digestive issues.

You are lucky to have access to venison (and so is your pup.) I know of many raw feeders who regularly give deer to their dogs-- I would if I could find a good (and cheap) source. I did feed some once when given a few pounds and Mateo loved it.

About freezing first, I honestly don't know- I am sure someone will chime in about that aspect.

Just make sure to follow the loose guideline of 80/10/10 (meat/bones/organ). And mix it up a bit in terms of the types of meat he is getting; variety of proteins is important.

Thank you guys! My husband reminded me that we didnt keep the lungs this time. But we plan to in the future I think... but maybe it isn't necessary. And thank you NYDDB, we do use that ratio/guideline. They don't get an excess amount of organ meet. And we harvest all the deer meat. where there is meat on the deer we take it.

It's really a shame that you don't have access to any. Is there any hunting in your area? I ask because, we know a lot of people who hunt in our town and they only harvest the "good" meat. And they throw so much out! Like the neck meat, rib meat, bones, etc. They only take what is required by law which is the back straps and loins i think? Im not sure, my husband is the hunter, not me. But he said he had a friend call him to harvest the rest of their deer meat and he got so much off of it and they were just going to throw it. Maybe there are some hunters in your area? If there are, I really doubt they harvest all the meat. Also, our butcher in town gives away beef bones for free. You can check with them too.

There are a couple of areas in the US where the deer carry a disease that can be fatal to your dog. You would need to check on that. I don't hunt but I just fed a commercial raw deer blend this morning. Mine are fine with it. Most people believe that to have a balanced raw diet you need to feed at least 3 to 4 different proteins.

Also, I have read numerous places that some wild game should be frozen for a couple of weeks before you feed. No weight baring bones. Necks and ribs are the only bony meats I would feed from a deer Each dog is different. Cane, our 180 pound mean ass Fila has a hard time with heavy bone. Our sweet little 60 pound mix can eat the shit out of any bone you give her.

There is a sub forum on this site that is dedicated to the raw diet. Lots of info there.

Great, Thank you Angelbears! I know we can have the meat tested and we will start doing that. We have fed our adult dogs this deer's meat with no issues (health wise). I agree with the no weight bearing bones. We will give our dogs the beef leg bones, just so they can eat the marrow out. Our lab can eat any bones great, but our boerbel has cracked a tooth eating the bones so we watch her real closely now and make sure she just gets the marrow out.

Oh, and we also do freeze the meat. There is no way we could feed and keep 200lbs of fresh meat :) Its in our freezer (now the dog's freezer) from when we kill it to when we feed it.

You could call your local game warden they should know. Tell them you found your dogs eating a dead carcass and was worried if they could get sick.

I'm really careful with Cane. A vet getting a look in his mouth is going to be major sedation.

Do deer have tripe? If so they will love it and it is great for them.

Yea, she had to get the tooth removed. Was a costly procedure, but had to be done :)

Our friend is the biologist in town for Game and Fish. I will ask him. Is tripe the stomach? We don't but could harvest it next year. We also got an elk and my husband has one more elk tag to fill. We kept most of the elk meat for us on this elk, but next one will be for the dogs.

If it's deer meat that has been freshly hunted, I would freeze it for a couple weeks to kill off any potential parasites. Otherwise, deer meat is great and is a regular protein source for my dogs.
