Red irritated paws.

It's been snowing in my area lately. Since the snow has been on the ground shadow has been licking his paws almost non-stop. When I look at them underneath they look red and irritated, is this because of the cold snow and is there anything I can do to help.

I don't think it's the cause, but it may be exacerbating the problem. Shadow was chewing them a day or two before I put any type of de-icer down. My gsd/lab remy is going through the same thing though but not as bad as shadow.

Buddy had dry skin in the winter, especially after playing in snow. My vet had me bathe his feet in epsom salt and water. After they are dry smooth a bit of antibiotic ointment and hydrocortisone cream inbetween the toes and on his pads. This helped a bunch!

Try Musher's Secret. I use it on the paws of my two, helps prevent the pads from getting chapped, and if you apply it right even helps prevent snowballs between their toes.

This happened with my Golden and she had an infection of some kind.... maybe just take Shadow in and just get it checked out.

Musher's secret is great!

But chewing on the paws, especially as it started BEFORE the snow, could mean other medical problems like allergies. Benadryl can help with the itchy paw and provide some temporary relief. Cortizone cream too. And dogs sometime chew their paws as a way to relieve anxiety.

Snow alone isn't usually cause for red irritated paws. Not for such short outings.

Just my 02.

I read it as starting since the snow, so yah, if it started before the snow it could very likely be an allergy, either contact or food.

I read it as snow was down when it start but de-icer was down after. I hope relief is in the near future either way.
