Summer projects (DIY or not)

My summer project is to build a chicken coop. Ideally, I would like to be able to house 10-12 chickens. We are going to be sectioning off a piece of the out-building my fianc* uses as a "man cave" and making a little chicken door that will lead out to a piece of land that will be fenced off for them. It sure beats the original plan of building a lean-to chicken coop off of the out-building. I think this will be much easier. Pictures to come once it's all underway!

^^ almost a year later and the coop is FINALLY done! Hahahaha

The back of the "man cave " has been divided with chicks on one side. Rabbits will be in the other side. :)

Well, here's a video of the girls enjoying their new place. They're going through that awkward stage where they are half feathers and half baby fluff.

Summer projects for this year:Extend the outdoor chicken run and also introduce a few a turkey hatchlings and guinea fowl (as well as a few new breeds of chickens). There is a local poultry swap coming up, so I'm hoping to get some new birds then.Get a male rabbit for my 2 female rabbits and let the breeding begin!Build a squash trellis for this years gardenBuild a few more garden boxes for vegetablesRun electricity to the horse barn as I want to convert the hay loft into an indoor training space for the dogs when it's too dark or rainy to train outsideBuild some dog equipment such as an A-Frame

For me, I definitely need to dig up a small part of the yard and lay gravel and fence it off and also dig around the house and lay gravel down. I had the same idea on building some dog agility things lol. Oh and finish some of the fencing I took down and then paint everything. It shall be done this year!

Oh man, where to begin... Our deck is tilted, so that needs to be fixed and power washed, stained etc. I did zero gardening/yard work last year because we brought a puppy home in June so that was my entire summer, so there's flowers to plant and perenials to tend to. I bought a picnic table at a garage sale that needs to be scrapped and painted, but what I REALLY want to do is get a Little Free Library built and put out on the corner.

Oh, and I also really want to convert the upper deck to a dog deck. Need to install a gate, add a sunshade, throw out some water proof mats and get a couple kiddie pools.

I can't see the pics!!! I have been painting. Spent the entire day yesterday painting my downstairs hall and wanted to kill myself by 8pm. It takes so long when your doing it by yourself! I also am prepping my upstairs to do board and batten like this -

My house is kind of rustic/farmhouse and my upstairs hall is a long corridor so I thought it might add some interest. I also need to put some recessed lights up there but not till summer probably.

Unfortunately the old pics have all disappeared when the forum made changes. Karennj that would be so cool.

I saw a thing on FB the other day for straw bale gardens! They look awesome and really easy. I tried a container garden with my kiddo a couple years ago and everything died... it's really hard to keep containers wet and cool enough. Here's a link to straw bale gardening: Straw Bale Gardens

That is an awesome idea!!

I want to do a nice tie out area for Angus with proper shelter and everything. He LOVES just basking out in the sunlight. I obviously can't be outside with him All the time, so I thought a tie out would be a nice way of giving him more freedom that way.

I love the rustic farmhouse look. There's something very warm and cozy about it.

That's both of mine, but especially Yogi. We have a fenced yard, and I work at home, but I still don't like to leave them out in the yard unattended for more than a few minutes. Bathroom, zoomies, a bit of running around, but not more than that. If they are secure on the deck, though, they could hang out and lay in the sun, chew bones, whatever. Much better than the being crated all day...

Exactly! When you compare how much room they have on the deck, or a tie out compared to in a crate, the choice is simple.

Sadly, my tie out will have to be behind the barn where no one can see it. I'm terrified of someone seeing my dog on a chain and freaking out and trying to steal him. They'd have a hell of a time though cause he's not the friendliest, but the risk is still there. I'd also only put him out when I'm home, just busy inside, or wanting to restrict his activity a bit.
