  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Super excited!!!

We went to visit with our new foster today. She's now home with us. We visited with the old foster mom, the bm rescue coordinator who pulled her from the pound, & the vet who saw her when she came out of the pound.
This poor girl was so dehydrated when she came out of the pound that her eyes were sunken. She also had kennel cough, with some serious snot in her eyes & nose, hacking all the time. She could just barely walk. She is seriously underweight. She has no fur on her belly & the underside of all 4 legs; all the way around her neck. But you can see the new growth coming in. Her teats bang into her knees when she walks.
She's gained 4 pounds in 5 days. Her blood sugar is still bouncing all over the place, but it doesn't seem to get so high that she's going to convulse, or so low that she'll go into a coma. She's blind from cataracts. She won't be getting them removed, as she's not a good candidate for any kind of surgery. Besides, messing with the cataracts often triggers glaucoma in dogs (that's what happened to Magee). She is still intact, & will stay that way unless she gets pyometra or something, because once again, she's not a good candidate for surgery. She is also heartworm positive. The vet she was seeing suggested we wait a few weeks to start treatment; let her get on a steady diet, & get her sugar under control.
Her build is so much like Magee it's uncanny. After getting a history on her, we realized that she might be a half-sister to Magee. She's 6 - 10 years old; from the same area in the state as Magee; and she has the red brindle coat that Magee's daddy Sumo had, which is kind of unusual. Her facial shape, along with her pushed in nose & crooked teeth are almost exactly like Magee's. And she's tiny like Magee was.
The pound had her name listed as Alfredo. I know the pound just randomly assigns names; but Alfredo? Really? She's a red brindle; and she's not a male (Alfredo is a male name). She's not the color of alfredo sauce. So her other foster family was referring to her as Ally. I think that it's a good name for her, even if she doesn't know it.
And we already lover her to pieces. :) Her tail never stops. She's always got that smile on her little bully face.
We're going to get her out in the sun tomorrow so we can try to get some pics. I'll put them up asap. Happy gotcha day, Ally!

Got a few pics today.
Her fur is also gone from her face. The feeling is the baldness on her underside is from thyroid; her face from a serious case of kennel cough.

She's always very happy & excited to go anywhere/do anything. As soon as she learns some manners, I think she'll be just fine.

Hehe...See the old brindle girl in the chair? That was Magee, bless her heart. Substitute a red brindle, who also can't see, the same chair, and you've got what's happening now. Ally is rapidly becoming one of the pack:

Your story brought tears to my eyes...Ruby55 you are a wonderful person and the world would be a better place if people tried to be just a little but as unselfish as you.

Quick update, then back to bed for me...Ally is gaining about 3 pounds a week, so her spine & hips don't show. She has a "5 o'clock shadow" all over the bottom of her face, which always has to be in our faces. So she's really prickly. And the fur on her face is coming in grey. She went back to the vet's last week to check her thyroid, & everything is where it should be; keep on giving her the dose she is on for thyroid. The fur on her underside -- belly, chest, etc. is coming in also. Her blood sugar is still a little bouncy, but not like Magee's where it would be in the 500's in the morning (WAY high), then down to below 100 the next morning (too low).
We've let her have the run of the house for the past 3 days, & she's done very well. She has finally lost interest in getting the lemurs or the cat. We still have to walk her outside at night; she's terrified of going out. She obviously has extremely limited vision in the daylight, & absolutely none at night.
She knows her name now, & has learned that if she smells food, and we say "sit", she can get it if she plops her butt down. :) We're working on "leave it" next, since there's so much a blind dog can get into. She's pretty stubborn, though.
One of her favorite games is chasing the bubbles in the kiddie wading pool when I fill it with the hose. Go figure. She shoves her face in the water, & bites at the bubbles when she feels them.
Here's the down side...Ally has to be in control with the other dogs. Ruby has learned to steer clear of her; when Ally comes into a room, Ruby leaves. That breaks my heart. I thought they would become friends. Today I was playing with Sunny, and Ally tried to get in the middle of it. Sunny started to sniff her neck, then up to her ears, wagging his tail the whole time, & Ally turned on him in a second. Scared the daylights out of him (& me). I'm pretty sure she didn't want to share me. And I wasn't even playing with her, or acknowledging her. I wanted to give Sunny some one on one.
I was worried about her & Bella, since Bella is the old lady (7 years old) princess. When Ally accidentally bumps into or trips over Bella, Bella stiffens for a minute, then gets out of Ally's way. Bella doesn't care about toys, or special treatment, so hopefully they never get into a fight. But I've seen Ally's nasty side a couple of times, & it's not pretty. It's all pretty much resource guarding, whether it's a toy or one of her people. I'm not surprised; dogs like Ally probably never had anything that didn't get taken away, so it's going to take some time for her to learn that she doesn't have to worry anymore.

Glad to hear that she is doing well, physically. Poor rescues have been through so much it is so hard for them to trust but it does get better. Keep up the great work!
