The right time to crop my Presa Canario's ears

I'll not pass judgment on the release date of the pups. I'd have thought later would be better but your pup is home now so nothing can change that.
My question would be why crop ears? Is it a medical thing with this breed or purely asthetic. Here in UK I've never seen it done. Even docking tails is only done for medical reasons (or for working dogs). Never seen the need to cut off part of a loved one.
If you are not going to pass judgement, then don't do it at all. Like for example, passing judgement on a person's decision to crop pup's ears (possibly).

If I am not wrong, for the presa canario cropping the ears is more of an aesthetic thing only. I am on the fence right now about whether to have her ears cropped or not. I just love the way she looks as a puppy without any cropping at all. So I was wondering if after a year her ears could be cropped for instance. But for what I gather from here, it seems like it's now as a puppy or never. I am not planning to have her compete or anything , so I think I will leave her ears alone. I have seen lots of adult presas without any cropping and they look cool to me. Of course, the cropping makes them look more scary! lol

Well that's your opinion and if you don't see it much you probably have not been on the internet looking at this breed more than 90% are cropped. certain breeds look better cropped and is part of breed standard.. cutting off a part of a loved one really!!!!, how bout neutering oh ya that's ok cause it stops un wanted pregnancy..-(another opinion, responsible dog owners don't have this problem) sorry but I have herd this stop the crop shit for years and it really pisses me off.. I don't run around giving woman crap for Botox in there lips or breast augmentation! sorry for the rant didn't expect to here that here touched a nerve..

As far as I understand, for the Presa it-s not considered a requirement to have the ears cropped for competitions but most of them have them cropped anyways, right?

You are correct.. but I can show you a Dobie with a long tail and floppy ears and you would not know its a Dobie, could do the same with a presa its really up to the individual. my female Dobie with floppy ears is a fawn and she is always mistaken for a wimarinner. ( till she shows her teeth lol)

Yes, you are so right about that! I have seen Dobermans with long tails and floppy ears as you said and they do not look intimidating at all.

At the end of the day these are guard/livestock dogs and should look as such (I live on a ranch and run cows and goats) if you want a good companion who will stop an intruder or mountain lion from attacking you or your herd this is an excellent breed for that. but at a young age they don't remember the surgery and the ears are trainable (to stand up) cartledge is still growing. an older dog the cartledgeis is trained down and its not going to work.. please take the time to take some training classes and be the dominate or this dog will over run you! I wish you the best with your pup and your decision..

I wasn't. I'm im not screaming stop the crop.
We don't do ear cropping in UK so I was asking why it is done. It's called asking a question and is used to advance ones knowledge on a subject.
Crop don't crop, dock don't dock. It's your decision. I personally wouldn't unless it was medically required. But that's just me. My having an opinion is not passing judgment. Neither is it me forcing my opinion on others or shooting them down for explaining theirs.
As other posters have said its asthetic. Now I know something that I wasn't aware of before. Isn't learning fun.

Corsos can show with uncropped ears too, but unlikely to win because 99% of their competition is going to have cropped ears. It's almost like comparing apples to oranges for judge, totally different look. That is what my breeder told me anyway.

You are correct , also in a confrontation IE dog attack, intruder attack, mountain lion attack..., it gives the aggressor much less to get ahold of.. I can control a wild goat by its ear and some cows ..

I know when i take my pup to go play with my buddies corso pup, they literally are always grabbing or pulling each others ears. So like Gunner Dad said, if they are used for security or protection it would be a better bet to go cropped.
