Thinking about a DDB for skijoring

Hello,

I'm new to this board.

Does anyone have experience using DDBs for skijoring?

I may become a DDB owner in 2013.

Thanks

DDB's are what I call shovel-nose dogs; they look like someone hit them in the nose with a shovel. :) Don't take offense; I live with 4 bullmastiffs. The only thing I would worry about is the dog's ability to breathe, if you're going very far. I know they can do weight pulls, but that's a short stint. I don't skijore; I live in Florida. But I've often thought that Ruby & Sunny would have fun doing that.

I'm not sure about a DDB doing this. Titan hates walking more than 10 minutes in the summer and 20 minutes in the winter. I believe most DDB's are like that. They prefer to sleep.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought DDBs were used as draft dogs. I guess there mostly companion dogs.

How are they for agility tests?

Although my Dogue has a great deal of energy...it's really in short bursts, as opposed to a long kind of stamina you might find in other breeds.

For example, we spent 2 1/2 hours in the park this morning, walking, hiking, with occasional play bouts of wrestling with a German Shepherd dog who is a friend. But along the way, he would just want to hang out on the grass and just chill out... It's not really "Go-go-go".

So, this is my experience with the breed; I don't know how long you would be skijoring for....short, fun trips, yeah they would probably love it. Long trips....maybe not so much.

Thanks,

We would probably only ski about 5k for about a half hour during a MN winter evening. I'm not exactly built for endurance sports anyway.

I have taken up Scottish Highland Games lately.

Could I teach him to retrieve a 22# sledge hammer?

I'm pretty sure they could do agility. But you would be up against Aussies & border collies; if you don't mind not having the fastest time, it would be a great activity for you & him.
