TM's & COLD COLD WEATHER-

At what point does a TM get cold?

Tessa loves to just lay on the coldest part, right on the ice, I feel like a bad mom for letting her, then I feel guilty for making her come in.

she not only loves the snow--she loves the slushy freezing puddles-I worry about her getting wet & cold.

I am a heat seeker--I'm wearing long-johns every day-have the heat cranked, have to put on 4 layers & a ski mask to walk her...It so so so sucks for me--

I wish we had that problem here. It's 42 degrees Celsius here today and Tully has only just got up and it's 7:50 in the evening:)

I have to say though those pics that have been posted ofTMs in the snow are fantastic. The best I could offer would be Tully in a pool of mud... not quite as picturesque:)

Buddyface.jpgMy dog Buddy, not a TM, but a Pyr mix, LOVED to be outside in the snow. He would refuse to come in in the winter. He had access to a heated garage, but he would sleep outside, not matter how cold. We would often "lose" him, because he would fall asleep, then it would snow and he would be buried under the snow. We would call and call until his head would pop up from his snow "blanket" On the other hand, he would refuse to go out in the summer, other than to do his business, or go for a walk if I took him early enough, or late enough to be cool. He would lay in front of the air conditioner all summer. I know our neighbors thought we were cruel, making him stay outside all winter, and letting the other dogs in the house. I had one even call animal control on me. They were very understanding when they saw that my dogs have access to fresh water(in the garage where my neighbor couldn't see, and the heated garage when they are outside. The animal control officer laughed when I showed him that Buddy had no desire to go inside, that he followed all the other dogs to the door, and once they went in he turned around and found a place to take a nap. I told him to come back in August and see the same scene acted out in reverse!

Apollo's breeder told me its virtually impossible to freeze a TM. I've certinally not found a temp to cold for Apollo. The colder it is the more he wants to play.....

"The colder it is the more he wants to play....."

Yes!!! this is how Tessa is becoming--last week it was below freezing every day, with horrid wind chill factors, I had to buy a ski mask, but Tessa is all about it.

I don't want her to get frost bite.
When I take off my gloves to feel her paws-even after 45 min of walking in the snow-her feet & toe pads are warm-I can tell you my own feet, in wool socks & dry boots are not as warm as Tessa's toes-I am not sure exactly HOW this is possible.

And this tail, sheesh-the fur is like 6 inches long.

Pick up some Mushers Secret for her paws and let her enjoy ;)

We bought ourselves insulated Carhart overalls last winter so we could be outside with Apollo and not freeze to death....We had temps below 0 earlier this week, Apollo thought it perfect weather for snow-bathing!

Set up a dog walking treadmill outside the door and you can watch her from the comfort of the house as she's "Walking through a winter wonderland"

DDSK--HAH!!!!
I would do that in a minute if I thought it would work!

Now if you had told me this 8 months ago, I could've worked it into her routine.
But then again, 8 months ago I did not have a TM, I had a very well clippered 'rottie mix', so romping through the tundra wasn't a thought.

I was quite certain she would have short rottie fur & my biggest hope was that she would at least get to keep some of her "ear frills" past puppyhood, because I love them so.

Well, she definitely kept the ear frills--and with this crazy coat & this tail--I don't know what I am going to do.

She HATES being brushed, we're working on it. Her head fur is growing weird & she has a tiny matt behind 1 ear that I need to get off.
Some progress has been made. I can 'comb' her fur with a very wide toothed pink plastic afro pick with soft coated teeth now, as long as I get her when she is really tired, & I talk to her softly the entire time, basically cooing to her...
Completely pisses off the cats who LOVE being brushed, combed & coo'ed at.
It's a battle, & she HATES her tail touched, which is a shame cuz it's this crazy huge beautiful monster of a tail.
I got to comb her tail *twice* this week.

my TM just loves the snow too, in Russia in winter time it can get quite cold, this year the coldest was around -30c and the dog totally fine living outdoors. Hope you don't mind if I put a pic of her in here

Welcome Lerka :)

So what's your pretty girl's name?

It's been well below zero for a month & snow 19 out of 20 days--Tessa loves it.

I don't understand how she can wake out of a nice warm bed & run out the door & pee in the ice & be happy about it--
I'm thankful because this has been an absolutely BRUTAL winter for Pittsburgh PA

Thank you everybody for the compliments to my baby girl! :)

Actually grooming is not that hard, just comb the hair once in a while.

Here is our pedigree:

She is living outside, just coming home to relax for a bit and for the meals, and she is totally fine with it in brutal Russian winters. Summers are less fun for her for sure.

Re: TM's & COLD COLD WEATHER-

My pup came from breeders in Minnesota and her family said they were happy as clams out in -30F!

I can't wait for winter for my babe (6mo) to finally be comfortable.
