Turmeric: Golden paste

After trying a number of supplements with no visible improvement and due to a presence of a limp that comes and goes, I decided to buy all the ingredients to make the golden paste:

1. Turmeric powder Amazon.com : Indus Organic Turmeric (Curcumin) Powder Spice Pack 1 Lb, High Purity, Freshly Packed : Turmeric Spices And Herbs : Grocery Gourmet Food
2. Ground black pepper Amazon.com : Alessi Black Peppercorn Grinder, 2.64-Ounce (Pack of 6) : Alessi Pepper : Grocery Gourmet Food
3. Coconut oil (you can use other oils). Amazon.com : Nature Gourmet Food

The recipe for the paste is here: Golden Paste - Turmeric Recipes

I am giving Hector and Ginger 1/4 of a teaspoon 2x a day for now and will increase dosage later.

I am hopeful.

I've just started using GP with the dogs. I think arthritis is starting to set into Kryten's surgical elbow and I don't want to use drugs if I can avoid it.

This stuff is the bomb. Assuming it doesn't cause tummy upset. Sometimes it does.

That's the problem I've been having, only I don't know which dog as I don't see which one threw up, just find the evidence.

I guess in this case I'd only give one dog their regular dose for a day or two and see if he throws it up. Then I'd try just the other dog.

So far no upset stomachs here. Only thing I noticed is they peed more (1x more) at night. I just went ahead and gave them a tsp each with food this morning.

Has anyone else noticed that their dogs smelt different after starting the GP?

I found fleas so I gave Hector a bath. I have not been paying attention to smell. I will check their breath and coat. The only thing I noticed this morning was that Hector hasn't gotten eye crusties around his whole eye. He has developed this abundance of eye discharge this spring so when he wakes up he has crusty circles and goop around both eyes.

I haven't noticed a huge difference in Roux's smell, but I just had my husband give her a good sniff and he said she didn't smell as much like Fritos as she normally does (that yeasty, musty smell that dogs with allergies often get during a flare up which, for Roux, is ALL THE FREAKING TIME). So, there's that.

And she's been tolerating her doses well, but she's always had an iron stomach. She's getting about 1/2 tablespoon with breakfast and dinner. She's still on NSAIDS as she recovers from a partial ligament tear in her knee, so I can't say for sure how much of her improvement has to do with her prescription verses the golden paste. But as soon as her vet gives us the okay, I'm going to be weaning her off of her medications and see how just does just on her supplements and golden paste.

I think it is helping Kryten. Even after yesterday's excitement his limp is minute whereas a simple walk a week ago caused a noticeable limp.

Not smelling any different on the body that I can notice, but their breath definitely smells better. Ginger is very old and has some rotten teeth so her breath is pretty bad, but that horrible stench is gone. Hector has bad breath, but it's actually not stinky anymore. This is very interesting.

I love GP (and just plain old turmeric) and have noticed huge differences in Angus. If Angus goes without for a few days, his leg gets really stiff when getting up from naps and he'll often have to limp while stretching the leg/walking it off. Angus usually gets a total of 2 TBSP (give or take a little bit) broken up between breakfast and dinner and we've been using turmeric/GP with him for about 8 months now?

I haven't really noticed anything in the smell department, but thats probably because lately he permanently smells like a swamp monster from swimming in some questionable bodies of water. He loves it though and free swimming seems to be helping his knee in addition to still attending hydrotherapy.

I just want to give a little update. It's been 12 days since we started. I give the dogs 1 teaspoon 2x a day on days I don't work and just 1 teaspoon 1x a day on days I work, so half the time they are getting double dose and half they are getting 1 dose. Today we walked for 3/4 mile and no limp. This is very significant for Hector. At times he looked like he was going to start limping, but he didn't. It's been a long time since we have been on a nice lengthy walk - pain free, at least visually. Please continue to help this boy .

Sounds very promising!!

My human friend started taking turmeric instead of NSAIDS before her martial arts classes... and has found it just as effective without some of the nasty side effects that they're now (finally) talking about.

I have some whole root turmeric in the freezer, waiting for some smoothies. I may have to make up some GP, too!

It's been a month and I'm really loving the turmeric for Hector. I'm not sure if it's doing much for Ginger since she's so old and I haven't noticed anything major. We hit the trail today and went 3/4 of a mile. It was a bit warm for him, but no limp! I think this is going to be a long term thing for him. He zooms around in the yard like a bunny. I am so loving it that he can move like a dog should be able to. :hearts::hearts::hearts::hearts::hearts::hearts:

Yay, Hector! Look at that big smile. I think he's liking the turmeric, too.
