UK owners, advice with insurance

Afternoon all, just wanted to pick peoples brains over what insurance provider they use (UK based people only please, for obvious reasons). I am struggling to understand the options offered i.e. Accident, Lifetime, Max-coverage (although I get the basic principle). Not looking to break the bank, but obviously don't want to leave myself open to huge vet bills (have made this problem before with present cat, and previous Dalmatians). As always, all help is appreciated :)

I used to insure with a relatively small insurance company but the premiums rose so much as my DDB grew older I gave up. In hindsight when she was insured it often seemed to lead on to treatment that was not always really needed - she was referred down to a vet school once when she had an absess and stayed there a week at a cost of about £4K. I reckon it is a sound idea to put money away in a savings account each month. None of mine are insured now.

Hi i had to ridgebacks and kept them insured until the premiums had increased to much x4 in 5 years. i then had to stop and we put the money aside. the premiums we would have paid covered what we had in payouts but i will say we were very lucky.
my plan is to have the insurance on my new dogue until premiums are too costly again. martin lewis says always take for life ( i do agree). be careful though as some stop at 5 or 6 with a dogue. purely pet insurance seems good to me

I got lots of quotes and they varied quite a lot for exactly the same cover. We wanted Lifetime as we didn't have that for our previous dog who developed arthritis and the insurance only covered his medication for the first year so for the remaining 4/5 years we had to pay for that ourselves.
Although it's lifetime, most seem to have a capped limit per year (standard is around £4k). But that resets every year and they'll pay up to £4k a year for the life of the dog.
When we were getting our first TM puppy, the larger companies (petplan, direct line) etc ranged between £30 and £50 a month, eeek.
Anyway, we went with pet-insurance.co.uk and it's around £13 a month for Lifetime cover with the £4k a year limit. We've claimed a couple of times and have been reimbursed within about 4 weeks.

I used pet plan for our ddb, lifetime cover and pay £27 a month which is a little more than some on here but he is covered for up to 7000 a year. Which is worth it for me as if anything was to seriously happen its sooo expensive for any of these big breeds to have treatment done.

I would always recommend to go with lifetime as if your pet picked a condition which could require long term treatment, without lifetime your insurance would pay for tat condition within that year, but once renewed are not obliged to cover any more costs for that condition, only anything new that comes up . We have been caught out like this with my previous dog x
