What would you do if you were out with your dog and a loose dog tries to attack

They make, or used to anyway, gell like versions of it. Was supposed to be less likely to be blown about but required better aim. Not sure how it would work to break up amdog fight though.

If a dog is already engaged in a fight I wouldn't use any device as I believe it would further the aggression towards one another. That's why I believe the best chance is to "attack" the dog(s) before they engage on yours.

Someone did tell me wasp spray works too

Only where it can't come even close to getting blown back on your dog. It can cause permenent nerve damage.

Welcome!

I'd like to buy a dog but after reading this thread and many similar news on the Internet I am wondering if this is safe. More precisely I am afraid my dog would be badly attacked by another aggressive dog (most probably pit bull like mutt) and maybe I too by the way. I cannot see any viable solution. Walking all the time with my dog and pepper spray, hunter's knife, taser etc. to be able to defend my dog is IMO a stupid idea. The best solution I figured out is to buy some strong dog and let him to defend himself. So I think one of Mastiff breeds should be ideal but I also read Mastiff breads are not good choice for unexperienced dog's owner. What do you think about it?

That's why I prefer a good cattle prod, personally or better yet a gun unless your uncoordinated it would be hard to miss your target.

Not arguing, living in NY state I have to be extra carefull with deadly force though....I'll stick to pepper spray for the initial response, which doesn't mean that I don't make sure I have something to back it up......

Got some pepper spray today and believe it or not it wasnt easy to obtain. I originally was going to order online but I realized you can purchase it and have it shipped to this state. Newer laws put into place within the last few years. I had to find an authorized dealer which was a cop store in my area thank God. Crazy!!

Yup....it could be worse, Massachussetts requires you to get a Firearms ID before you can legally own (much less use) pepper spray in the state. And don't try to carry it there as a non resident either. A non-resident has to have a Non- resident Firearms Concealed Carry License in order to have pepper spray! I have to leave mine home when I go visit my parents.

I swear I lived in a bubble for many years. Having my dog has now opened my eyes to more than I could even imagine and its just beginning.

Me too, bellareea. Having a Mastiff is unlike any other dog experience there is...the stable, calm energy...the presence...and the power! But, this is what I love about them, too.

By the way, I did an internet search for pepper spray; most won't ship to NY. But then I found a shop just 2 blocks from me that carries it. :)

I was out walking with Bear last night through a particularly dark part of our neighborhood and I saw the reflection of eyes (I wear a head lamp at night as we don't have street lights where we live) coming towards us. Having lived out west my first thought was "thats a big coyote...crap!" But it took me a sec to realize that there are very few coyotes where we live in NoVA and that it was the neighbors dog.

This is the third of fourth time his lab/pit mix has been out wandering the neighborhood. The thing, is it routinely tries to nip at Bear but anytime a human approaches it, it runs off only to come right back around. Frustrating to say the least! After about a min of yelling at him to go home a swift well placed kick to the gut/ribs sent the message that verbal commands didn't. I didn't kick it too hard as I know the neighbor and I am not trying to kill his dog or crush any of its bones but his dog getting out is pretty routine and he doesn't seem to care in the least.

Generally I carry certain forms of personal protection but the use of lethal force is a last resort. Typically, threat of life or loss of limb is the determining factor.
