Who has a English mastiff that can tell me about how the drooling is...

This can be a one word or short answer. Can you tell me how the drooling is with you English mastiff? I am sure it will vary but just want to know about your particular EM.

We have an 8 month old EM, she drools when she eats/drinks. She drools a lot when you are feeding her something she really likes such as bananas and treats at the doggy bakery. Otherwise, she drools during exercise, either walking or playing, so we always carry a towel with us. Generally those are the only times she drools, not quite as bad as I thought. However, if you are dressing in the morning to go to work, put your pants on after you put the dog in her crate, save you a lot of trouble!

Depends on what he is doing. Eating, drinking, playing hard with the sister-in-law's Corgi, we see a ton of drool. Laying around having a lazy day, not so much.

Same as above posts......after eating, drinking, exercise, watching you eat something. We find evidence (slingers) on the walls very often so I assume while they are just chillin on the couch while we are gone too:scared2:

The drooling is nothing like what we thought it would be. We generally have to wipe his mouth after he has water and if he's salivating for treats (like at nail trimming time). We ALWAYS take a drool towel with us when we go places...you just never know when you're going to need it.

Same as the answers above but I must say he is not as bad now as when he was really little. To me it seems like the older he is getting the less he drools. Don't get me wrong he still does but its not as bad. He is pretty lazy too so that probably help. :)

When you read people say that you'll need a rag to clean the ceiling, they really aren't lying. One time my old EM shook his head, shot some drool that hit a torche lamp bulb, and the bulb burst. It was one of those "seriously?" moments. I watched it in slow mo. *POP* LOL

EM's aren't St. Bernard droolers. They have moments sure, they get really slimy, but it's not end of the world drool. But if you're considering this breed, or most mastiffs in general, know it comes with the territory. It's gonna happen. For the person who hates drool or messy floors, they're going to be mortified at times. I think most of those types of people will come to accept it and possibly even laugh (while they snatch a paper towel roll.) Like my wife for instance. But if there is someone who is dead set against the mess, it's going to be a hard sell. Don't undersell the drool, explain that there is a 100% chance of moisture. ;)

haha Jenny hasn't reached "full drool" yet.... we dont get stringy slimy drool like we do with Sarge (GF's family EM - 8 yrs old)
Jenny just kind of drips a little..... our floors will be wet once she drinks.... we might get wet after she drinks... but she is fairly dry still haha

Raistlin is 1/2 EM 1/2 Neo and like everyone else only drools walking, after eating or drinking... then he walks up to my husband and wipes his mouth on his clothes! Have slipped on his slobber on the kitchen floor more then once and always take a towel on our walks!

We carry a towel with us. The drool as stated above is not as bad as we thought, but ours like to carry water after they drink. We have taught them to "wipe your mouth". They shake it off or rub it on their couches if we do not have a towel in our hands.

If you have another dog, you can train it to clean your mastiff's mouth when he slobbers....that's what we did and it works like a charm!

Good question! Whenever I have told people we are getting an EM we are told "oh aren't they the big dogs that drool everywhere?". I was thinking the drool factor would be no worse than a rotty which I have experience with. I never wiped my rorty's drool off, just stayed back when he ate and drank. We used to joke that he drank half of a bucket of water and drooled the rest! Also exercise on a warm day would trigger it. I hope I am not under estimating the drool of an EM, not that it will upset us too much, we'll love him anyway. I may just get a slight shock if it is much worse!

But then again I have a whole lot of nappy squares in the cupboard that we used to catch baby spit up with when the kids were that little, so I am prepared!

We have four EMs and from early on we train them to "wipe their mouth". Drooling is not bad at all. Water left in the jowls after they drink can be fun. We have towels they run their jowls over to wipe off.
