Why not to support BYBs

The add does say "owner" not breeder so my guess is they shouldn't even own a Mastiff. Boy am I ever sounding like a "Mastiff snob" lol

Hey everyone...check out the 'My Fila' thread by Mydogblue! There is a most interesting (not in a good way) video just posted that unequivocally shows the Mom in this advert is none other than Mydogblue's Fila. And the Neo Dad is one of the poorest representatives I have seen in a long while. BYB!!!

Funny how you guys don't miss a thing. I would have never put 2x2 together. For the love of dogs. Too bad everyone else didn't love them for them and not money.

But I do have a question about byb's. How can they sell their Pups so cheap and still make money. Ok I know @ 500 or 1000, there is profit but not enough. People don't understand the difference when looking online for puppies between BYB/breeder. I have only ever did a pound puppy. I refuse to pay a kijiji puppy mill my hard earned money to put food on their table.
Anyways, I'm babbling again. Most byb's state the Pups come needed, de-wormed and with supplies. That surely cuts into profit
Also why is their no laws to stop cross breeding a few breeds with others. Filas, pits, etc (just examples) with other xl breeds. I would NEVER want a Fila as I live different then they like, but wouldn't hesitate to rescue one. But to knowingly purchase a Fila mix, CRAZY!

I can't speak for others, but in the US you can buy the vaccines at the local feeds and needs and don't have to go through a vet. Wormer is cheap if you are just doing basic round worms (which is what most people do when they buy over the counter stuff) and I know that our vet gives us puppy packs for the puppies and so does our dog food company and these are free so it appears like people are going all out when they haven't paid for it. Even vets here in Canada, you can say have the first shot but that could be the cheapest shot going that doesn't full protect your puppy. And even then just because the ad says it doesn't make it true. In the end if that is all they are doing and buying the stuff over the counter their costs are next to nothing to have a litter as they don't worry about what they are feeding, weight gain on the puppies, recovery of mother, health checks, microchips, full scale vaccines, temperament testing, etc.

Exactly BlackShadow and it is getting worse where I live. There are income-based spay and neuter clinics popping up all over Oklahoma. A facebook acquaintance actually purchased a bull terrier, spayed her, and got all her vaccinations for under 100.00. She said to me "wow if this dog had papers and I was a crook I could turn around and get like 500.00 bucks for her" She is right between out of control boxer breeding and puppy flipping the local rescues here are pulling their hair out. As for the breeding these BYBers do their worming and vacs from the feed store supplies on the parents and then go get legit vacs for the pups at next to nothing because they have no verifiable income. So it cuts the profit a little, but their full breed pups are still half the price than that of the local rescues adoption fees. So business is good for these bastards.

I had watched the video on the other thread but missed the ad on kijiji. I noticed the video has been removed & so as the ad. I hope the puppies at least found responsible homes.

I have to say I bought my choc lab from a backyard breeder didnt breed show stuff but great hunting dogs, her 3 breeding dogs were all health screened and certified she did her homework and she gave a 1 yr contract gaurantee on the pups and if I ever didnt want her anymore I had to give her back to them. I personally look for health testing, what dogs look like if they are AKC reg I wont touch a ckc pos. If I get any sort of gut feeling about the peopel in a bad way I walk away not all are bad but most are its the same way in the horse world though if yall thinkt he dog byb are bad ste intot he horse world for a minute and you'll think the dog stuff is pie lol. I test every animal I own for genetic diseases I am much into that to the point of being extreme.

that doesnt sound like what anyone would call a BYB... a BYB is someone who breeds for profit and knows nothing about the dogs or why they were bred they also do not spend money on health testing.

I agree with Dogman that doesn't sound like a back yard breeder at all. BYBers aren't just breeders that don't do conformation, there are just as many breeders that believe in working as opposed to show and they breed for that. It is a matter of preference and like you when my father wanted a hunting dog he didn't look in the conformation ring :( BYBers are looking for quick $$ and that is all.

I cant for the life of me get why people think they will make money breeding dogs just saying between feed, vet bills and time I dunno you cant even break even as tot he buying vacc's at feed stores I have bught mine from Dr's Fosters and Smith and the vac I bought was the exact same brand that the vet used. I hate taking pups to the vet that same lab I bred her got 13 choc pups went for their first vet check and shots and wormer came home and they caught parvo from the vets office I lost all but 1 in a matter of 48 hrs so I use my horse vet who comes to the farm and either he or I vac them I dont take them in until they have had the whole series of shots that was a hard lesson learned.

Speaking of BYB's, how is this for scary? I think the line that really made my heart sink was the last... "deposit for the gentle giant you desire..."
Now what is going to happen when the owners take these pups home and they mature into what they SHOULD become.
They WILL not be prepared for the intense level that both of these breeds possess :(
It breaks my heart...

Now I know why the ad disappeared from the lethbridge site after I first noticed it.

They cross breed a lot them like that in our area sell them as bandogs. And they are just that staked in the yard to keep people away.

I mean at least be honest about what these dogs have the potential to become, if both are true to standard.
That is what scares me, these idiots breeding then using terms like "gentle giants" so a family buys one, then down the road when their teenager's friend gets hurt they are surprised
I know it is also the work of the buyer to research what they are getting, but lets be honest, which average pet owner truly does that. Unfortunately WAY too few.
I am just frustrated.
@Smokeycat, ya. there is a ban on selling Fila's, CC, pitbulls on kijiji. They may have been flagged

I didn't look through all the pics on the ad but for the most part I thought fila as soon as I clicked on the ad. It shocks me that they would advertise them as gentle just to get people to buy them. But like I said before, I guess you really can't fix stupidity.

F.I.'s!!!!

---------- Post added at 03:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:33 PM ----------

I emailed them. Basically said, shame on you for advertising gentle giant. Told them that they will be gentle giants with their family but no one else.

Here is something I have learned VERY QUICKLY with Murphy. Being he is an EM, and he is a "Gentle Giant" he is a BEAST. A power house, a HUGE stubborn K-9 with a MASSIVE, STRONG mouth. I don't care what anyone says gentle or not he is still strong stubborn and powerful. And he is very well trained with an amazing listening ability. And he is purebreed from a rep't breeder.

I am now going to add an "Brazilian Mastiff" into the "English Mastiff" and hope and pray my backyard training, and lack of knowledge will make me a "Gentle Giant" WTF!

This is what the ad should say......

I really hope that injury doesn't come out of the MONSTER I have created in my backyard. I just want to make money and hope someone will help me. I have breed my baby boy. He is a strong stubborn english mastiff with an old Fila that has changed owners a few times. Please research Filas to understand the lifestyle change that will have to be meet. I hope you have a lot of money to pay for these guys. Food is not cheap as their stomachs are picky. Vet bills are double and training isn't cheap but is absolutely necessary. I don't know if socializing them is a good idea because filas don't like to be social, but English Mastiffs do, so your guess is as good as mine. I cant guarantee anything but a dog that is Mastiff.

PATHETIC

Babyjoe, I will tell you that I watched this thing on tv once about the bite force of dogs. They listed the top 10 dogs with the heaviest bite force. They rated the force in lbs. I believe the mastiff ranked #1 with the heaviest force (not sure which one I can't remember) & had a bite force of over 500 lbs. So I can't imagine a fila coming after me with a bite force of that magnitude. They're beautiful dogs no less but definitely not a dog I would willingly hand over to an amateur.
