Yeast?

Hey guys,

So my 2 year old English Mastiff has always had really yeasty ears.. I'm currently putting Malotic in his ears everyday for the next week or two. Vet prescribed him some last year and it cleared up his yeast infection fairly quick but we ran out.. so I went out and got more and we started treatment again. But the last few months, he's had what appears to be yeast on the inside of his jowl fold on his bottom lip.. I've been trying to wipe it off every day with his drool towels, but what can I put on there to help it? It really bothers him cause every time I wipe it, it itches him. I always wipe his mouth after he's done drinking as well.

What can I do? Would neosporin help?

Thanks,
Adrian

Adrian, what are you feeding him? A diet high in sugars, carbs and starches will cause yeast build up in the coat, ears, jowls and between the toes. Yeast in the ears typically is a dark color, but I haven't seen it in the mouth. Are you sure what you are wipeing out of the mouth is yeast? Most EM's will have a foamy discharge from the mouth when they get over excited, are hot, and from drool. Could this be what you are seeing? To keep from getting the ear infections wipe his ear out every few days with a baby wipe or a paper towel with a little mineral oil on it. If his food is high in starch, carbs, potatos, sugars, etc. add plain yogurt to his diet, it helps.

Duncan gets yeasty ears during allergy season. So I spray them with a diluted white vinegar solution once or twice a week then wipe them dry. 1/4 to 1/2 cup in a household sprayer, the rest distilled or filtered water. I use it for disinfecting around the kitchen too.

Yes, diet is huge when it comes to yeast. Sugar is to yeast, like gas is to fire. Antibiotics will also cause the yeast to go wild.

Denna has one... ONE... dirty ear, the other has always been perfectly clean. We changed from kibble to raw food, and the "dirt" is still there - vet has looked at it and is not concerned, but if I don't keep it cleaned out, it starts to really bother her. I clean it out every few days with wipes and have an aloe/tea tree oil ear cleaning fluid that seems to help... but it always comes back. So.. we're still looking for a solution to this one, too...

Forgot to mention.. he is fed a raw diet. Prey Model Raw diet, to be specific. So diet shouldn't have anything to do with his ears. The stuff I'm wiping from the fold in his jowl is brown, and clumps up a bit. Looks just like whats coming out of his ears. You think wiping that fold with a water vinegar solution could help?

Coconut Oil is one of the strongest things you can use to combat yeast. I had an internal yeast infection (candida) in my intestines that took months to get rid of (it sucked). I could eat NO carbs, carbs=sugar=yeast food. And I had to eat 7-10 Tbsp of Coconut Oil a day. It kicked it. I would suggest once you get this round cleared up to put coconut oil in the ears once per week and add 1-2 Tbsp per day in his meal. My other suggestion was raw, but I see you're already doing that... good job :)
