So he has been dry retching every now and again for a few days. My partner looked into his mouth and couldnt see anythung at the top of his throat. He is still eating and drinking normally and is still running around fine and being himself but surely its not normal... appriciate your thought :)

Is he dry Retching or coughing?

Does it happen after he's been running around a bit? Or sleeping?

Kennel cough is sometimes described as "the dog sounded like he was trying to hack up a hairball", and is most likely to occur during/after activity and sleeping.

Minor kennel cough isn't a huge deal other than the fact that its contagious as hell. He may not even need meds. If the cough gets worse, or he starts weezing or acting sick then a vet trip is definetly in order.

Duke came to us with Kennel cough (we didn't know until he was hacking) and yeah sounded like he was trying to cough up a hair ball, next it was Lilly (red lab or apricot) she was snorting like trying to hack up a loogy then the 10lb mix....just have to let it run it's course 4-6 weeks if it is mild. Our Black lab never showed any signs or symptoms. GL to you, it was usually at about 2 am - 3 am when it was the worst for Duke and Lilly.
Needless to say I had a few sleepless nights for the first 2 weeks then usually only after they ran around the yard chasing each other.

If he's just got a cough, not acting sick, not weezing or giving you any sign there might be breathing problems, and as long as the cough isn't a constant thing, honestly he doesn't need an antibiotic unless he's got a previously known health problem that'd make him prone to pnuemonia. If it does get worse, or any of the above changes then a vet visit should be done just to be safe.

Just keep in mind that kennel cough is considered highly contagious so you should probly skip any "doggy activities" for a couple weeks at least.

Its not often... and it doesnt really sound like coughing it sounds like hes trying to bring something back up... Ill see how he goes. We didnt have any puppy play dates organized and where we live is super quiet and very very rarely come across other people/dogs when we walk.
