2 Qs. Registration and insurance

I have been in contact with a couple breeders. One that we are clicking with offers three options of registration and varying levels of cost for her puppies. Pets are the least, with no papers. Limited is mid range and full registration is the most. If my family does not plan on participating in shows and will not be breeding this guy, do we have any need for the limited registration?

Also can anyone recommend or advise against any pet insurance companies? Almost all information I have found so far is biased paid advertisement.

Thanks!! -m

I would personally go with the limited registration. You still couldn't breed or show the dog, but AKC paperwork provides an extra layer of proof as to who owns the dog and who has rights over him.

I don't personally have insurance. Some people swear by it, others don't. If you DO decide to go with insurance check what they cover (many don't cover "genetic" problems like hip displaysia), check their maximum payout per year and also per incident, as there are often hard caps on them. Instead of insurance we have a seperate savings account set up, and we put $25 per week into it and we pay for all non-regular vet visits out of it (or pay back the credit card for said vet visit from it since in emergancies you aren't going to hit the bank first). Depending on what else is going on we'll occasionally pay for regular visits out of it too.

I have Trupanion insurance for my dogs. It isn't the cheapest interns of premiums but they do payout 90% (after your chosen deductible) without a lifetime cap. As long as the condition hasn't already been diagnosed and therefore considered pre existing they do cover many genetic disorders including HD. The claim process has been very easy and they responded within a couple of weeks on the first set of receipts I sent in. I don't think I'll ever own a dog and not have insurance on him now.

Does the breeder just let you pick which puppy you want and give you whatever registration you chose? That would worry me, breeders only let their TOP TOP puppies be sold on full registration, and most of the time they require you to list them as a co-owner. If they let you pick a puppy that is pet quality, but you chose to pay more for full registration they really aren't trying to 'better the breed' one bit.
