5 month old EM female has vaginal odor- is this normal?

Hi everyone,

Our EM, Duchess, has been emitting an unpleasant vaginal odor recently. She doesn't seem to have any discharge and I wouldn't classify it as a metallic smell. Just kind of "skanky" for lack of a better term. She isn't having an issues with peeing, so I don't think it is a UTI or a yeast infection. I asked her breeder and she said that Duchess's mother smells like that and it is normal for EMs. I wanted to know if that is accurate. The last couple days I have been cleaning her with some baby wipes a few times a day and that seems to help. I don't mind keeping it up if this is something typical for giant breed females, but I also wanted to get some additional input to make sure I don't need to take her in. Thanks a bunch!

based on what you are saying I dont think your pup is sick. However, Stella (my CC) never really had a smell, even when she had a mild case of vagintis. I personally would bring her to the vet just to make sure everything is ok.

I am not an expert by any means, there are many members on here with MUCH more knowledge than me. but when i think of odors I usually suspect diet issues (when illness it not obvious).

Ditto what jcook said.
We've never had any odor... Denna will be one year old next month.

I do give Denna cranberry supplements on occasion, just to help the urine pH a bit. Not sure that really does anything, but figure it can't hurt. Cranberry supplements really helped our cat after she had a UTI. Never want to go through THAT again!

The only time any of my girls had any "odors" was when my younger one went through her first heat and got pyometria. She had a bad smell from the infection.

Are you sure it is a vaginal odor? It could be an anal gland issue. Petey has anal gland problems and you can tell when they need to be expressed -- there is this weird, almost fishy smell that is hard to explain. I would look at diet and infection and maybe add in a bit of yogurt to her diet every few days to prevent some illnesses. Daisy is 16 months old and hasn't had any odors like that.

It's not really a fishy smell. I don't know how to really describe it, other than it smells kind of like she isn't cleaning herself (when she actually does). I will try some of the suggestions here and take her in. I don't think it is diet, but I could be wrong. Maybe she is getting ready to come into her first heat, although I would think she is a little young for that.
