  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

6 month old EM was shocked by electric fence

Buddy, my EM walked up the road this afternoon, normal sniffing and general "checking the place out". Next minute I heard the scared startled of a puppy and him running to the other side of the road. He had touched the electric fence, to which I didn't think it was switched on. The farmer didn't put notifications signs out! Buddy ran back to me. He seemed ok. I didn't fuss as I didn't want to reassure the scariness of the situation. He seem a little quiet later on, nothing to be concerned about. Now it's 5 hrs on, he's acting really scared of his own shadow!!
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried

He is unsure what caused the pain so he is going to be skittish for a bit but will recover. My darling husband thought it would be a great idea to put our old electric fence dog collar on bear (which we no longer use and I never trained bear on) and Bear got too close and got shocked (thankfully it was on low) and for the rest of the day would not leave the middle of the yard or his crate unless he was leashed and led around. I was furious but the good thing is that the next day he was already much better. Try to do some confidence building things with him. A walk on leash and some obedience training.

Thank you. That's really reassuring. He went really clingy, hiding behind our backs and running to our other dog Indie (boxer). He's finally fell asleep.
Fingers crossed, all will be ok tomorrow.
I will do the confidence building and get back to normal routine ASAP.
Thank you again x

I'll be watching him very closely now when we're near it. I'm angry that they haven't put a sign up!! Thinking of kids and other dog owner!
Grrrr I'll be speaking to the farmer.

He will be ok. Like someone else said he has no real idea what caused it so he is nervous and doesn't want it to happen again. Just walk him and do some familiar things today and he will forget in no time.

No worries. We have electric fences around our pastures and like your pup, ours had to touch it to understand why it hummed. Cruiser didn't like it as a pup and respects it as an adult. It is all part of the learning process. The voltage used in most horse/cattle fencing isn't enough to harm just startle as long as the owner has it hooked up properly. People are nuts and you never know why they do what they do, so please be careful.
