7 Month Old Male 100 Lbs&34 in. tall already

Hey guys. I have a 7 month old male cane corso that is already 100 lbs and 34 inches tall a week before he turns 7 months old. Hes hardheaded(gets that from me) but after a stern look and command he knows whats up. I also have a 4 year old female boxer that is only 50 lbs but still puts him in his place. Being a first time cane corso owner i have to say that i have fell in love with the breed and probably the only complaint i can think of is the drooling. Need a towel, not a rag, a full size towel to clean him off after he drinks and eats. My worries are these; i had his ears cropped at 3 months old by a reputale vet in Chicago. The vet has told me multiple times that the ears dont need to be taped or posted, and that because they are a short crop, that when hes done teething they will stand naturally. At his growth rate, he has lost all his baby teeth and had all his adult teeth for a month now. I continually to tape them every night when hes sleeping to help but it doesnt seem to be doin the trick. I am very OCD and if those ears dont stand the way i want them too then they will drive me nuts! He also gets carsick every time no matter the amount of time i take to make the whole situation a good one, such as not feeding him the night before if i know i need to take him somewhere. Does anyone else have this problem with their big pups? My boxer is the perfect codriver leaning in turns and keeping her balance 80% of the time. Hope some of you actually read this book i wrote and i look forward to hearing your input and advice on my monster Enzo. 20131207_135242[1].jpg20131025_234239[1].jpg20131115_211320[1].jpg20131228_105845[1].jpg

Welcome to the forum. Your pups are so cute.

Some CC people should be around to help you with the ears question.

Hi and welcome to the forum. You vet is partially right that most times ears don't need to be posted but that isn't an all the time thing. Our last litter we just did, none of the ears need to be posted but the litter before we had to post one ear on our male and one ear on our female.

Teething does affect ears (oddest thing really) but if all teeth are gone they should start to come up on their own. Have the ears ever stood up at all or have they always looked like that?

When posting you should do for 4 to 6 days and then take the posting off to give them a break. When you take the posting off you need to be rubbing those ears several times a day with lotion so that is gentle on the ear and they won't mind, will feel like a massage to them, to encourage the blood flow. I also don't know how you are posting them but there is a youtube video from a corso breeder that shows an easy way to post.

WOW! I'm sorry I can't help with the ears or the car sickness, but the 34 inches tall thing really stood out to me. That's 7 inches taller than the breed standard, & taller than many Great Danes I've met. Is that a typo? Or was the height not taken taken at the withers? If that is acurate, that would be a very intimidating presence to see a CC with that stature.

I believe if you dont start posting 24/7 they wont stand. In pic 3 when the dogs are laying down in that position and stand up does the ears on the Cane Corso stay up at all ? When you post at this point only leave the posts out for up to an hour! Id really wouldnt leave them off at all for at least the first week. Leave those posts in until your absolutly sure they will stand. She is getting older at 7 months so it will probably take alittle time for them to stand right but if your dilligent enough(OCD) they have a real good chance still at standing. I got my Cane Corso ears cut slightly longer so i posted as soon as stiches were out. I have a Doberman with long ears that taught me how to post, actually the local vet asked me to teach them how to post, they use to use the tampon method until they seen my girls.

Here is link with info how to post http://www.mastiff-forum.com/showthread.php/17759-Right-ear-problem

Hey folks! Thank you for making me feel welcome. After a little thought last night i realized my boy Enzo is finishing up his 7 month of growing and heading into his 8th month. Also, i remeasured him from the withers instead of the head like i thought it was and hes 27 in. tall from the withers. As for ear tapping, i have tried a simple piece of tape at the fold of the ear, recommended by my vet, and also posted them for a few days with a styrofoam cup and the ears taped up like that. Only things is, hes 100 lbs and when he wants to get rid of the tape or the posting, he can shake them out like its nothing.

Sounds like your not posting right...Styrofoam cup is not needed at this point. He shouldnt even be able to tell the post's are in if done correctly, sorta like putting a earring in and forgetting about it. Your Vet doesnt sound like they know how to handle ear posting properly.

Taken 3 minutes ago so u can see his ears. When he perks up once in a while they stand but 80% of the time they are drooped like in the picture. The styrofoam cup was a month and half ago and taping has been intermediate with dif styles to get it too hold. Also i massage them every night after he falls asleep for about an hours, massaging from bottom of ear to top of the tip to increase blood flow. Will try it with that grey foam next, as soon as this blizzard in chicago stops and lets me go out and get it.

Grab the foam at Lowes, get the 1/2inch and maybe the 5/8 since hes so big. Dont forget the Coaches tape and get it at Walgreens if you can. Ive used couple brands but the best is Johnson & Johnson and Mueller, generics dont stick nearly as good which makes them not work good. Good luck and if you need any help let me know!

I was told to keep my Boerboel on Sure Grow during teething to assure the ears would develop and stand properly. Sure Grow is a calcium/Phos/Vit D suppliment. The breeder was adamant that it is critical during teething to do this. Maybe because calcium is in high demand while the new teeth are forming as well as bone development needs.

He is only 27 in tall which is still pretty damn big for 7 months old. Measured him properly this morning and thats what i got. I also dug my car out of the snow and went and got the styrofoam backer rod and taped up his ears. He hated it when i put it on but a nice bone seems to keep his mind off of it. Thanks for everyones help and advice. Ill continue updating with the ears.

He is out of a small breeder a couple hours south of chicago. His dad comes from the Scandfio Armani line and his mom comes from the Bel Monte bloodline. Both parents are registered with the ICCF and the Continental Kennel Club.

34" at 7 months is Huge. From my experience something is not right. Regarding car sickness any pup I have had including my last CC gets carsick until they get used to it. I always crated them as long as possible and learned to place the crate in the back seat facing each door= more stable. I even use the seat belt to hold the crate steady. Let them go the bathroom before the car ride--do not feed them before the ride--that seems to help too. There is something about the far back of a truck, van or SUV that I believe makes the pups get sicker quicker compared to the stable ride in the middle of the vehicle. Also short but frequent stops can help to acclimate the dog to comfortably ride in a vehicle. Good luck.

definitely post and tape. our pups ears were a little long , one went up and one would not . we kept waiting to see if it would magically go up on its own. it would have really bothered me to have one ear up and one down. I tried posting on my own and really did not do the best job. took the dog to someone who had a lot of experience with posting and after about 4-6 more weeks of it finally went up perfectly. hang in there
