A little about the Boerboel

The first advertisement mentioning the name “Boerboel†was placed in the “Landbou Weekblad†(Farmer’s Weekly) of August 1984 when Mr. Johan de Jager of Utrecht stated: (Free translation): “If breeders want to assure the future of the Boerboel, and rescue what could still be rescued, a breed association must be formed as soon as possible to lay down breed standards and appraise dogs that are as close as possible to the set standardâ€

But what caused this dog to retain and develop its unique characteristics without directed human interference for such a long period of time?

Firstly the absence of human interference in breeding practices caused the breed to remain unchanged as a result of cosmetic whims for much longer that most other dog breeds. No breed society existed for the Boerboel until 1986. If Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival at the Cape is taken as the “origin date†of the breed, it means that unregulated breeding, including cross breeding, took place for 334 years, followed by a human managed breeding program, barely 24 years old. Humans have a known tendency to manipulate and change animals to what their desires dictate. As stated earlier, breed societies are simply collections of humans with a specific purpose in mind. By not regulating the Boerboel, the strongest genes were allowed to dominate freely. An unregulated dog pack is very similar in nature to a wolf pack in that the strongest male (Alpha) will mate with the females in season and the strongest female (Alpha) will kill the weaker females and sometimes their offspring to reduce competition.

If cross breeding was allowed to happen at will, why didn’t the dog lose its unique characteristics? The Boerboel genes that were dominant over other dog breed genes were simply those characteristics made them exceptionally suitable to the harsh African environment. If a dog was not hardy and resistant to the African illnesses and parasites, if it did not possess an amicable nature, was no good at protecting the ox wagons of the Voortrekkers or the homestead of a settler; if it could not face up to a lion or a leopard; if it could not kill snakes; if it could not run properly to at least keep the chase dogs in sight and if it could not hold its prey down until its master could kill it, it was of no use in its environment. Dogs showing these characteristics were therefore fed and deliberately bred with other dogs showing the same or complimentary characteristics long before any breed society was established. The result of the functionally driven breeding program, which clearly included survival of the fittest, resulted in a recognizable, unique dog named the Boerboel or “Farmer€™s Dogâ€.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. I don't have any real knowledge of this breed but I love reading that about how they become what they are. Pretty Interesting.

I will have to check it out. I am ALWAYS reading something. Lately I have been caught in Books concerning the Fila and Kangal.

Oh, share some of those Kangal links. I am pretty much obsessed with those types. You did see the post where I posted all those Kangal type dogs didn't you?

Yeah, I saw that yesterday. They are an amazing animal, for sure. I will pull some of the links and post them when I get a chance. The more I read, the more I like them.

Yes, they are! http://www.kangalclub.com/

I wanted to post this link as well. It is actually available in the last one but seems to only work occasionally. This club offers a mountain of interesting information about the Kangal. The reading room link is the best.

Think about walking one of the big white Assyrians down the street. Woohoo, talk about a distracting dog.

I have an aquatince that is from South Africa. When I told him I had a Boerboel. His face lit up. He got all excited. He said Boerboel's are the best. He said when you send them out they always catch something. ( note to self. Don't let the dog loose).

Hey DMikeM,

What is it like owning a Boerboel? How are they around other non- family members and animals? I wanna know more of the family life of a Boerboel :)

Well here is an example of life with the BB. Satuarday I went to go see her brother at a dog freindly outside BBQ place near on the lake. This was our first visit and I had Jade on a short lead. When We go parked there was a husky dog that came right up to the car and started to posture while looking at Jade who was hanging out the windo. She just sniffed at him and stayed calm. I kneed the husky out of the way and told him to go. I got Jade out and the stupid husky (smoky is his name) came back around the car all puffed up with his fur up. Jade just got in front of me and stared at his not growling or pulling just looking. I gave smoky the bottom of my boot in his chest and pushed him away and we walked over to the buildings. 2 retriever/setter mixes charged us and Jade just stuck her paw on one and pushed it down I yelled at the dogs and they backed off. The cook came out and settled the dogs down and Jade just kept an eye on them. She allowed the cook to pet her once I started talking to him but when he had just came out she just stared and watched him.
We met up with her brother and his owners that had another dog a pitt mix with them and they all sniffed noses and started playing in the water. She allowed Keean's owners to pet her and inspect her collar with no issues at all. She has not seen her brother since she was 9 weeks old and never met his owners.
When she is home though she is very protective of the yard and will charge the fence or gate when people show up if I am not in the yard with her. I do not find her challenging at all as a breed and she is just as the history and breed standard says she should be. Great with people but guards when she should.

I take my dog to work every day.Sometimes I take him off leash into stores that I know. He is the perfect gentleman, Even in the bird seed store. They have two dogs running around in there. He just comes in and sits while the girls pet him and play with his face. He loves it and shows no real interest in other dogs.
But I have to double side the fence in my yard. Because in the yard he is on guard. So far has broken through two pickets with his head.

I think this is what the BB is really about. A very agreeable dog in the public but a guard dog at home. In the store the dog is like "why should I guard your store it isn't mine" at home "I am guarding this home because it is mine"

This breed sounds like an amazing Acreage/Farm dog for those who want the guarding of land but that social need to want their dog to go places with them.

My coworker got Jade's sister and she has 5 or 10 acres (I forget) and she says Sadie has created a path along the fence line and an X from corner to corner. Aside from one incident where her rescue dog tried to dominate her things have been great. She was purchased after a prowler tried to break into their daughters bedroom window while the daughter was home asleep. The police think it was an attempted abduction or rape. They have not had an intruder since and there were signs that Sadie prevented an intruder. They found a ball cap and knit hat the same as was seen on the previous intruder in the security captures. They found the hats in Sadie's daytime dog house. Wonder if she had a large meal the night before? ;0)
