It depends on the issue with the skin, some are for a skin that may result in "hot spots" from a dog itching from allergies, so a medicated or antibacterial shampoo is given to heal the skin and reduce infection. Some are given if there is an actual skin infection or yeast infection going on with the skin. There are shampoos to dry skin out that is oily or weepy, there are ones to moisturuze the skin, etc. There are so many different types of RX shampoo's not to mention everything under the sun that pet store wants to sell you. Is there a certain shampoo that you are asking about one that maybe the Vet is recommending?

Here are some of the common vet prescribed shampoos

Pyoben (Medicated antimicrobial, keratolytic and follicular flushing shampoo formulated for the topical treatment of infection) ,
Dermachlor ( for dermatological conditions where antiseptic, antimicrobial, antifungal, cleansing) ,
Allergroom ( a moisturizing shampoo for allergic dermatitis)
Ecto Soothe ( natural oat-grain derivative, soap-free shampoo with hydrating and soothing properties),
Hexadene ( is an medicated, antimicrobial, antiseptic, cleansing shampoo ),
Ketochlor (is an antifungal, antibacterial shampoo to be used in the management of fungal skin conditions and bacterial dermatitis)
Ketoseb ( is a antifungal, antibacterial shampooto manage a variety of skin conditions, bacterial dermatitis, ringworm and malassezia [yeast] skin infections)
Sebolux (Antiseborrheic, keratoplastic and antiseptic shampoo that removes scales and crusts associated with seborrhea and other non-specific dermatoses)

Sorry if I over explained what you may have asked.... 23yrs in the Veterinary hospital and you tend to give more information than needed sometimes :p

I use the anti-bacterial/anti-fungal shampoo that I purchased at Petsmart. Does an awesome job.
just curious- why did you need to use the antibacterial shampoo? My dog has allergies so i am always looking for anything that may help..

Titan had severe skin allergies. He's about 98% allergy free since going raw diet. The shampoo helped a lot, I mean a lot. I ran out on his last bath and used a oatmeal shampoo. It doesn't do as well at the other shampoo. I'm going to buy more the anti bacterial/anti fungal shampoo.

I'm a big fan of pyoben for skin allergies as well as owners having allergies to the scents in shampoos used on their dog. We would hear this A LOT from owners in the grooming shop I worked in. One lady had a 2 year old GSD that was just beautiful. But the dog had horrible allergies to just about everything. She would bring the dog in every 2 weeks to be bathed & brushed out. I remember one time we ran out of pyoben & our bather used something else that had a small amount of perfume in it. Sent that lady into an outrage as her husband had a horrible allergy attack from the smell. I ended up having to rebathe the dog no charge with the usual shampoo to get the scent off her.

I'll have to find out where I can buy that shampoo besides Amazon. Thanks for the heads up about pyoben!
