antlers as chew toys?

Zoe is chewing through absolutely every toy I give her (thankful it is just the toys!!) Have any of you had experience with using antlers as chew toys? I have heard they are indestructible. Any tips?

Mine love antlers. I wouldn't say they are indestructible but they do last longer especially if you go for a full antler instead of a split one.

I bought a full antler for Luke, can not say he was that thrilled about it. Very seldom chews on it.

I might not said that right, meant not a "split open" one, Just got an image in my head of Luke on the floor wrestling and chewing on a full set of antler, lol

So glad I saw this post. Just saw this for the 1st time at my pet store on Friday and was very curious. They are pretty expensive. I was wondering how long they last and if they are safe for the dog to fully eat? Will they start to splinter or crack like some bones do? I'm a freak about giving Loki bones because when I was a kid our neighbors dog died from a bone that he swallowed which had a sharp point on it.

I'm told that storing the ignored antler in their kibble for a few days improves the attraction. I've never tried it......lol

IN THEORY the split antlers could break. But neither of mine has managed it and I don't know anyone who has either......

Sadie has two varieties, one that is split in half and one that is whole. She prefer the split one. She has had that one for almost a year now. She does loose interest in it and will leave it for weeks to months and then she is all about it for a while. They are expensive, but if you take in consideration the amount you spend on other toys that are in pieces after a day or two, it is a better investment in the long run:eek:

I worry about breaking a tooth. Having Filas, running to the vet to have their mouth looked in is something I try to avoid. Personally, I think they are too hard.

Angelbears, that is what they said at work when I showed them Luke's. They thought it may be to hard, so I'm kind of glad Luke don't care for his.

My guys are raw fed, they crunch through raw bone with no problem. The antlers are 20 times harder. However, I admit that I am way over protective. Even if I had mastiffs that would let a vet look in their mouth, deep chested dogs are at higher risk under anesthesia.

Our dogs LOVE antlers. they have never split off any pieces and the few tiny pieces they did get off were extremely soft because they had been chewed on for so long. I even prefer them over nyla bones because i will find little pieces of nyla bone on their dog bed and I dont love the idea of them eating plastic.
