any ideas of what this could be

Hi everyone...wondering if anyone might have any idea on what this could be: my rotti mix recently has had some pain in his jaw, when I open his mouth, took him for x-rays and a sedated exam, vet found nothing with his teeth, ears or mouth. suspected it could be an autoimmune problem which attacks the jaw muscles, put him on pred and pain meds, the dog seemed to improve but i also took any hard stuff away so he wasn't chewing..did a special blood test for that = negative. so off the pred. vet concluded it was probably TMJ. now a week later he seems to have gotten worse, vet wondered if it is a retrobular (sp) abscess behind the eye BUT usually the eye would be swollen and dog would be painful if you put any pressure on the eye...he's non reactive to that but now if I put pressure at the base of his ear behind his head he squints and his eye flutters a bit, yet there is no problem with the ear itself and unlikely he has a middle ear infection since most of those are caused from an untreated outer ear infection which he has never had. vet is recommending a cat scan next; i can't find anything online that would cause jaw pain in a dog other than the ear infection, that abscess behind the eye or TMJ.
