Anyone ever make a covering for a dog bed?

I have a foam eggcrate mattress that I can cut to shape, but I am looking for ideas on what to use as the covering.
I can sew just fine but I'm not good with zippers and buttons.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Yup, velco. I did a cover for my BILs CC cross's bed. A Big square with velcro closing the one end. NOT stick on velcro, it won't stay on by itself and you'll gum up your machine sewing it, just get sew on and sew it on.

Velcro here, too!
zippers are harder to work on, and buttons are a chew-magnet.

I've also just slip stitched the opening by hand after the stuffing/pad is inside.

Ok thanks good idea.

Have you guys ever used fleece as a cover? Ranger really likes to sleep on the kids' fleece blankets and I'm wondering if it would turn into a furry nightmare with his fur sticking out of it; or something he appreciates. He's a rottie so I am going to look for some type of black, dark brown swirled fabric. Better to hide the fur, lol.

Fleece washes up pretty good, just wash it before you make the cover to allow for it shrinking. Also when using Velcro get the industrial stuff, the others wear out to easy.

I've not used fleece as an actual bed cover, but I have blankets on my couches and half of them are fleece. They're awesome for that sort of thing.

Yep, fleece I like and so does Boone... when he decides to sleep on his bed, which is less than 5% of the time...

I have been contemplating getting a sewing machine top do exactly this. Make dog beds for the soon to be home puppers. In the past I could never find a bed I liked and even the most expensive ones were cushy for a month or two but then got too dirty, eaten, or flat. I would rather be able to make my own at low cost and just replace them as often as needed, especially during the puppy stages.

I am not sure if anyone knows the answer to this, but: Will a crib mattress work inside the XXL Midwest Crate? The measurements seem to cause me to believe that it will fit, but I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

Also.... on and off topic. I was considering, if I go the sewing machine route (never sewed more than a small pillow :p) if making a crate cover would be difficult. Does anyone have any experience making these?

Crate cover would be fairly simple, baiscally a big box. Might take some practice to get the corners where you want them though, so try it first with something cheap.

I have made them in the past, my mom is a quilter so I have grown up sewing. As long as you can make the corners really tight they work great. Like Ruth said use material that is cheap at first. We used canvas material like the ones for curtains that block out noise and sound. Hope that helps and I have used a crib mattress and it did fit.

Thank you so much Wyo and Ruth. I will have to try it, and I am incredibly happy to find out about the crib. It seemed like a great bedding solution to give support and comfort.

I use one of those large fluffy bathroom floor mats... Kevlar doesn't chew it or anything, and it's cheap and easy to wash.

Do you really need something that is sewn? I used to just throw an XL beach blanket over the crate. Worked well enough to keep him quiet and when he was done with the crate I still had the blanket to use.

For the new pup, I don't plan on making her a nice bed until she's house broken. I think I will just fold up a beach towel and wrap it in a fleece blanket. That way if she messes in it I can just throw it in the wash.

Oh, that sounds like a really good idea on to of the crib mattress. I don't really want to sew anything since I am more at hope sanding down and painting a deck than sewing even a button on.

Only reason I was thinking about a sew crate cover was to make something tight fitting for the crate that looked neat, but the more I think of it it may be a bad idea. I do not want to restrict air flow through the crate too much.
