  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Boone started limping :(

Right.. Another update (and I know how silly it makes me seem).
So I thought long and hard about what the vet said. I also remember distinctly that I wanted to get a second opinion. So I did.

Apparently, the vet I was so happy about is a dick! Something I've felt for a long time, but no vet was willing to listen to me (I've been to 4 different ones) was that Boone might have an abnormal growth issue. Angular limb deformity of sorts. This one (lucky number 5!) took one look at Boone and took him straight inside to get an x-ray (finally!!!). Film developed, 5 minutes later, what is it? An ANGULAR LIMB DEFORMITY! F***! When I've been saying it for the past 2 months nearly, why does no one want to listen?

This vet was extremely patient with (obviously riled) us. He explained everything that might be wrong, confirmed it with the x-ray, showed us the areas of concern, assured us it WILL be corrected with no other discomfort to my baby, charted out the WHOLE treatment plan for us as well! Including charts and what we need to look out for :)

Of course, we're going to have to take care (reminds me of the bubble wrap thread some time ago), but c'mon, how money minded are the other vets????

AND he asked some pointed questions to make sure that I'm following the correct PMR diet (thank you to all who helped!), and was not satisfied till I explained the contents of every meal!

Net net, Boone's on pain meds. Once he stops limping, he'll be in a 21 day cast for support. This should help correct the bone growth. Once that is done, he'll be in a soft cast for some time to make sure the problem doesn't recur. And swimming. Boone will have his own hydrotherapist.

And the issue is probably all genetic, since the vet (after another long conversation) ruled out environmental and food related issues.

Crossing fingers!

Glad you found a vet who is interested in the care of your guy. I hate vets who wont hear anything I say.

Just curious can you post a picture of his legs. Im interested in what this looks like.

What a trouble maker. I'd just take him back and get a new one. It's not like you're attached to him. ;)

Soooo glad you found the right vet! And that Boone let you know there was something going on - and that you listened him!

Glad to hear he's doing well. My Eurasier had something similar where he was lifting his back paw up and didn't want to put any weight on it - I'd been giving him homeopathic calcium supplements, and turns out (as they sometimes can) they'd been storing in his joints. He did a round of anti-biotics and was fine. If you're going to supplement calcium, make sure you supplement with vitamin C as well - dogs don't pee out excess calcium in their system, it gets stored in their joints. Vitamin C helps counter-act any excess. Your dog may be different, but just wanted to mention.

I don't know if you'll be able to figure out with these (the dumdum refuses to stay still!). The before:

What homeopathic pills is he on??? How did you find that VET??? Midas is having same
prob with feet turning out... I got great advice from members last night..... But if this can be
fixed with just a soft cast, no exercise for a while & swimming that would be awesome :)

Well, I'd thought about that, but his daddy won't survive the blow :p

:) Me too! And he sure is a talker, even more now that he's caught on that one of us will pay attention to him if he barks! (considering he doesn't do it often!)

I have been giving him Vitamin C supps, but no extra calcium. Since he's on raw, he's been getting his stuff off of bones. Also, I've read it a ton of places (including members here) that you shouldn't give these giant guys extra calcium, so I've been avoiding it. Thanks for confirming my Vitamin C theory, tho!

Errrrr, I'm in India so if I say "Tilak Road, Pune", it's probably not gonna make sense :D
I'm not going to that vet in any case, the other guy who put the soft cast on is much much better! I hope Midas gets good soon too, I've read your posts and I know how attached you are to them.

Just for kicks, here're some "after" pictures.

yeah, poor for the cast, but his limp is definitely better! I'm hoping after the hard cast it'll all be fine and dandy... And I'm hoping I can deter him enough to not chew off the cast!

Cooper has had mysterious limp occasionally from 9 months forward.. he'll be 2 in 2 weeks! all growing pains, except for one time when his nail ripped. I flipped out the first time...cried even lol... if you've checked him from shoulder to toes and he lets you (no pulling back or whining), but just limps while walking or holds his foot up while standing still, i'd bet growing pains.. :)

He lets me check it out alright. I'm still hoping growing pains, but because of his limp, his paws are turning out now. It's probably genetic (no records of parents), so the correctional measure.
