Can a purebred Dogo be happy in a pet home?

Mostly just out of curiosity b/c I hopefully won't be in the market for another dog for many years; but I have really been considering a Dogo down the road...so I joined to learn more about them.

I know they are hunting dogs and I am not a hunter; in fact I wouldn't know where to find a wild hog if my life depended on it anywhere in the near vicinity.

Could a purebred Dogo be content - not just adjust - but be well adjusted in a pet home - some training/obedience, agility, possibly schutzhund and acting as a guardian companion?

Jazz50 you have made an excellent choice. I have owned three and they can do well in a pet home. Just get control of him early so you don't have problems later.

Jazzy, I don't think you'll have problems owning a Dogo. I have been following all the work you've done with Ms. V.

Thank you both for the encouragement.

It especially means allot to me Hector because Ms. V. is the first dog I actually made an effort to train, so to think that someone knowledgeable feels it's an admirable effort makes me feel good.

I've looked at the hunting pictures and the dogs look so...into it...that I want to make sure I wouldn't be being selfish by depriving them of that aspect of life.

But Ms. V. has ALLOT of spunk left in her and I would never give her a nervous breakdown by introducing another dog into her home!

As long as they have an outlet, sounds like that will be your plan, should be fine. Had the breed over 22yrs. now. Lots of energy!!

How would agility be? I know they'll never compete with a Border Collie...but being as they're bigger dogs I'm just wondering if it would be too much stress on the joints; or am I over-thinking?

Even the big guys "can" do agility... have you seen this big guy run the course??

Well....that big boy isn't setting any speed records! I LOL'ed at his jaunt through the weave poles...

then...I remembered that Veronica wasn't setting any speed records either and her weave poles were only marginally faster.

Truth be told, my "high energy, athletic" pit bull is amazingly lazy. When it was hot out, she used to hide under the A-Frame or go into the tunnel and not come out.

I don't think she was devastated when a CCL injury ended her agility career.

But now that I'm getting older...I'm probably going to be better off with one of the big boys...I won't have to break a sweat to keep up :)

Here's Veronica's one and only clean run from class. I don't think we could have ever competed anyway - (I need ALLOT more work on my technique) and she's WAY too dog reactive/aggressive. But it was fun and I miss it even if only to take classes and practice in the yard.

That mastiff video is a classic, LOL.

About the weave poles- Border Collies (and BC mixes) are built like slinkies; they glide through those poles like fish in water... I suppose that flexibility helps when herding sheep.

Jazz I think you will be pleasantly surprised at your dogo's in and out of the sport ring.

Please provide videos of magnificent animal in the ring.

If your dog has the right drives, personality, is structurally sound, then go for it!

Wow! That little Chi is quite the spunky package!

Border Collies are amazing going through the poles. I love to watch them. I almost wish long hair wasn't a deal breaker for us. But also the Border Collies I saw in agility class seemed kind of high strung. I think a BC would stress me out.

@ SG1 - it won't be for many (and hopefully MANY) years. I have a spunky little pit bull in her prime who rules the roost.

Thanks for the videos - they do seem very agile, athletic and versatile.

This may sound stupid, but they kind of seem to me to be the least Mastiffy-y of the Mastiffs...but that may well be because my education is lacking and I tend to think of all Mastiffs as being like the big boy in the agility video posted earlier.
