Cane Corso 5 Month Old - Food Dilema

Looking for a new large breed puppy food (live in Alberta, Canada). I am sensing he is sensitive to chicken and I am now well aware that the calcium / phophorus ratio is very important among other important ingredients (lower fat as well as lower protein than a lot of puppy foods). Any recommendations, I am already concerned he is growing to fast and would like to do my best from here on forward to do the best for him. Firstmate? Solid Gold? Holistic Select? TOW? Argh so many!!!

I feed my CC Orijen Regional Red now. It's Grain-Free. I also feed some Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Beef Formula, and mix up some Honest Kitchen's Love (dehydrated, human-grade, grain-free formula) as a topper for the dry kibble. He loves it. I stay away from chicken, corn and grain when choosing feed for my dog and he does great; haven't had any issues with skin, coat or soft stool. His previous owners fed him Taste of the Wild in the red bag, which I continued for a minute. I've also tried Merrick Grain Free Real Texas Beef, and EVO Red Meat Formula which he liked fine, but I wanted to feed him higher quality food, and now he's really spoiled. LOL.

I order online via chewy.com, it's great and very convenient for me. And I use dogfoodadvisor.com to research and compare food brands. Yes, there is many choices. When I was searching for better quality food I read a lot of what dogfoodadvisor.com had to say, they look at ingredients of each brand, go into detail about it, and it's very informative.

From what I've learned on here, Mastiffs are generally allergic to grain and chicken found in kibble, and Mastiff puppies should eat Large Breed adult food because puppy food has too much calcium which causes fast growth. Slow and steady growth is ideal for a healthy Mastiff, as you already know. Also, you could try feeding a Raw Diet, as was already mentioned. :) Best wishes and good luck.

I found a new line of Acana and this is the analysis, do you think this is reasonable:

  • Crude protein (min.)27%
    Crude fat (min.)15%
    Crude fiber (max.)6.5%
    Moisture (max.)12%
    Calcium (min.)1.9 %
    Phosphorus (min.)1.2%
    Calcium: Phosphorus Ratio1.5:1
    Omega-6 (min.)4%
    LA (min.)3.9%
    Omega 3 (min.)1%
    EPA (min.)0.1%
    DHA (min.)0.2%
    Omega 6:Omega 3 ratio4:1
    Glucosamine (min.)600 mg/kg
    Chondroitin sulfate (min.)800 mg/kg

The above analysis is Acana's new "limited ingredient" line - as noted above it is the Pork and Butternut Squash formula. Within this line there is also a duck and lamb formula.

The calcium and phosphorus confuses me, is the % too high, I believe the ratio is ok?

My concern still in the percentage of calcium and phosphorus for a puppy, if the percentage is high yet the ratio appears ok according to all I have read, is that ok? I keep reading the calcium should NOT be higher than 1.5% and the phosphorus 1% ,
preferably 1.3% for calcium. Am I looking at the percentaage on the packaging or the ratio. I feel like I'm killing my young boy.

Also as for exercise is doggy daycare too much? This happens on weekdays while at work for socialization and weekends are low key?

I am very concerned I have done so much wrong.

First, I'd like to say to relax. You're not doing so much wrong. You've come to the right place with loads of knowledge.

Check out the Acana Regionals Pacifica, the ratio is slightly high but the calcium and phosphorous levels are ok.

I checked the Acana Classics and the Large Breed Puppy C to P ratio is 1:8:1, way too high.

Re: exercise. You can exercise a pup 5 minutes for every month of age. At 5 months, he can exercise 25 minutes at every exercise event. Avoid excessive running, jumping, playing, walking, and navigating stairs until 12 months of age.

I know i have to relax... We will try out the Acana, cross fingers he takes to it - it's nice to that it is made right close to home here. Yes I find this forum to be informative; thank you.

I don't think we over exercise Rudy as in walking, going on long journeys however I think it may be wise to cut down the play at daycare? Cause pups can go hard for a long time as they are having so much fun.

I suppose the reason I seem extra vigilant is that our first CC passed away after only a year and a half (cancer).

Just want to do what I can with what control I do have.:)

Welcome from the east coast and another corso owner. We used Acana formulas on our pups when they were younger without issue, think it was the grasslands one but can't remember for sure.

Sorry to hear about your first corso :( losing a pet is never easy and losing one so young is just heart breaking.

Thank you for your thoughts and I am happy to have joined the forum. It is tricky finding non-mastiff owners who can relate and I know that would be the same with any breed one would have, however society has a misconception of the CC's due to people abusing their strength and abilities.

I was that person when we got our first CC, I was ignorant in not knowing what an amazing, kind, loving and smart canine that they are. Yes it was completely devastating losing our first at such a young age, it is still unbelievable at times but he taught me so much and gave me a whole new outlook on the CC. He will never be forgotten and I am a much wiser owner this second time around because of him.

I look forward to watching Rudy learn and grow and I look forward to sharing stories and spinning ideas off all of you.

Just got home not long ago with the Pacifica and Rudy loved it (of course I mixed with other kibble) crossing fingers it agrees with him, I am sure it will :)

Glad to hear that he is liking the new food.

The CC is truly an awesome breed in the right hands. I had rotties before and still got schooled by my first corso a couple of times and each one still teaches me something new.

The Pacifica seems to be working for Rudy, still adjusting but much better. He just turned 5 months a week ago and is sitting at about 70 pounds (he does not look overweight), his father is 140 and mom approx 110-115. At this stage and with Pacifica what amount do you suggest I feed him. I figure from the guidelines 3 1/2 cups per day, is that sufficient?

That's the adult guideline right?
The puppy guidelines should be listed. It's normally anywhere from x 1.25 - 1.75 based on their age.

There should be a paragraph under the chart on the bag itself about puppy guidelines.
