Cane corso loosing hair

Hello! I have a 10 months old cane corso who's loosing hair like crazy, when I pet him I can see the hair fall on the floor.

I'm wondering if it's only the food I give him or it's health related. I'm thinking of bringing to the vet but I might just try to change food first and see what happens.

I'm feeding him Horizon Complete All Life Stage (because the pet shop around here doesn't have the Adult Large Breed they only have The Large Breed Puppy) and according to dog food advisor website they rate Horizon Complete with 4.5 stars so i'm thinking it's a good dog food, but yet again it's my first dog so I know nothing about dog food hehe

What do you guys think? Should I bring him to the vet right away or try a different kind of food first?

Where are you located? Is it a hot climate? Is he otherwise acting happy and healthy? Is he gaining or losing weight excessively? Drinking more. The most commonly associated medical condition with hair loss is a thyroid disorder, usually weight fluctuation and lethargy are also present.

Improper nutrition can also cause hair loss, so if he is otherwise healthy a diet change may be helpful.

Dogs also shed more at certain times of the year or with weather fluctuations.

Also where is the hair loss occurring? Is it generalized or localized to a specific area?

Titan is shedding like crazy in the last month due to our weather changes. It's 20-30 degrees one day and then 50-60 degrees the next. Mastiffs can shed quite bit due to weather and it also can be food related.

I checked out the food and it's loaded with grains which generally, mastiffs are allergic to grains and chicken in dog food.

Does he scratch? Does he have little bumps? Does he have an "off" smell about him?

I'd add some salmon oil to his meals to help with skin issues (it helped us) - human salmon oil capsules, or the oil in a pump you can get from the pet store, either would work. And, when you need to get a new bag of food, maybe look for something without chicken or grains - and be sure to save some of the old food to use during the transition to the new one, you want to go really slow when changing to a new food brand.

I go through times of no shedding at all to hair piles all over, they seem to shed heavily a couple times a year, then not at all.
You don't see any bald spots do you?

I'm located in Atlantic Canada and it's pretty cold this time of year -15 to -40 degrees celcius (5 to -40F, I think lol). Temperatures have been droping little by little since like sept/oct i'd say.

There's really been no changes in his behavior looks happy, active and healthy. To me there's no excessive weight gain/loss he seems to be growing normally.

I didn't tought of weather, I was thinking he'd shed more like this Fall when the temperatures would start to get higher.

He scratch once in a while but I think it's normal? I mean he's not scratching like crazy, I might of catch him scratch like once in the last 2-3 days. No bumps or smell either.

It might be an allergie to grain and/or chicken like you said I think i'll change brand of food and give it a try.

Thanks for the reply!

There's a small bald spot on his belly. I'll try taking a picture tomorrow, he just fell asleep don't want to wake him up haha

And thanks to everyone who replied, much appreciated!

If you plan to change the food to a grain and chicken free, do a slow transition.

Slow transition to the new food is as follows to prevent diarrhea. If at any time during the transition, the pup has diarrhea return to previous amounts of food per feeding.

Amount per feeding:

Day 1-4 ¾ cup of old food and ¼ cup of new food.

Day 5-9 ½ cup of old food and ½ cup of new food.

Day 10-14 ¾ cup of new food and ¼ cup of old food

Day 15 Start 100% of new food

Generally, mastiffs are allergic to grain and chicken found in kibble. You can check www.dogfoodadvisor.com www.dogfoodanalysis.com
