Choosing a leash for an English Mastiff Puppy?

Hi All,

We are getting our 10 week old English Mastiff puppy next week and we're getting ourselves prepared for the new addition.
One of the items we've heard mixed reviews on and there are so many options - is the leash.

What type should we be looking for? Are there any "must haves" for a leash?

Any advice is helpful and very much appreciated!

I like leather leashes personally but if you want a good one in a hurry I do like the 2 ply nylon leashes from pet smart or PETCO always 2 ply though

Tapd on my skyrocket

Mac is on his second collar, I've been getting the cheap 3$ flat nylon collars from walmart for now. As far as leash goes he has a very lightweight one because he started out with an intense dislike of the leash and this one he doesn't even realize he is wearing.

Petsmart carries the Premier line of martingales w/buckles. Love'm. Not expensive, AND they have a quick release. They don't make the big enough for an adult EM, but for a pup who's outgrowing it anyway they're great. And yah for the leash, something nice and lightweight for the baby, you don't want something thats going to drag on his collar.

Martingales for the young ones - lightweight, but not easy for squirmy puppies to wiggle out of. Our 5 month old is still in her second martingale, and we love it. And I agree about the leash as well. You don't want to splurge on a $40 leather leash until they're out of puppy-hood and teething!

Another vote for Premier leashes and collars. I've had some of mine for years and they're still in great shape. The only one I ever lost was chewed through when I forgot to take it off after putting one of the Newfs in the car.

Thank you so much for all your replies, this really helps and secures what we thought - cheap, light-weight and in the future something more sturdy.

Thanks again.
