Collar Size From Puppy to Adulthood

Hi everyone! First, let me just throw out a general thank you. This site has been very helpful in getting me prepared for Maddie next month. Very grateful.

Ok, so I have been looking into collars and a lot of people seem to really enjoy the Martingale Collars for training purposes. My question is this: What sizes should I have to get her from 8 weeks to full grown? I feel like I will be buying a lot of collars during that first year! Thanks again!

You will!! But I didn't write the sizes down...only found what would fit and if IIRC (we had some old ones laying around) I think the first one at 10-11 weeks for my EM was 12-14" then on to 18-20" at about 16-20 weeks, and now he's on to a 26" collar at 28 weeks. His current collar goes to 28" and should last him another couple months, hopefully more...I've seen EM with 31"++ so its hard to tell exactly.

I'm sure someone has copied these measurements though!!

The best thing to do is to get a simple flat collar on a puppy. You do not need that much of correct on a little 8 week old. If you do what I have said to so many others regarding focus (paying attention to you only) then you will not need a martingale. Puppies are the easiest to train if started right from the start. So the few things you should have from the start
- Flat collar
- 4 to 6 foot leash
- 15 foot long line (for teaching the puppy to stay in your area so you can teach to stay out of stuff in your home, keep from potting in the home, etc.
- use kibble as treats to start (keeps the tummy from going bad and puppies just love treats w/o knowing what they are, I tell my clients have the treat jar like the candy jar, b/c puppies see you get into it after they know what comes out they get excited and want the treat)

These are you simple stuff you need for training in the beginning, if you feel you need a martingale later in age then get one at that time.

I have bought 3 collars for my pup and he is now 9 months old. I dont consider that a lot and really when the flat collars are like 10 bucks and the martingale was I think 22 its not that huge of expense.

I believe we bought our first martingale around 10-12 weeks for both of our female dogs. I honestly can't remember sizes though! Sorry!

I think Kryten is on his 4th collar now, s-m-l-xl. The last one has been his first martingale and honestly I got it at the time because it was the only collar that he wasn't going to outgrow within a couple weeks. I found one that goes up to 36" so hopefully it will last until he finishes growing and I can get a nicer one that he won't outgrow. The problem is that his neck is already over 27" at 1 year.

These guys grow fast we have learned and some are definitely larger than others. At two years of age our boy is now wearing 32" collars and let me tell you they are hard to find...I have them custom made to order now and this gentleman is wonderful to deal with. He makes beautiful collars and accessories. Here is his website...Rick Gallione at Master's Pride...http://masterspride.com/
