Corso dry food help!

What brand name food that's large breed puppy that is good for my corso? I know it has to be a certain percent protein, certain amount of calcium and phosphorus as well as say it's approved for growth. Is an all stages growth natural balance for adult and puppy's OK for a Corso or is there too much protein and not enough puppy nutrition, ect. In it that's essential for a puppy?

Hopefully others with more direct knowledge o CCs will weigh in for you,and you can try searching previous threads too..but common wisdom here is that the big pups need to be on adult food as early as is reasonable as puppy foods usually have an ingredient balance that will encourage growth in ways that later compromise their long term bone structure and joint health. We fed our DDB Acanna Pacifica. Got her off crap puppy Chow at 8 weeks.

Welcome! We all love dog pics, especially puppies!

I agree with Yamizuma! No puppy food needed to allow these big babies to grow slow and stay lean. We feed Earthborn Holistic Meadow Feast (just transitioned off of TOTW). Both foods are grain and chicken free! Our guy never had great poop on TOTW and already much better on new food! Welcome :)

Would you both say natural balance wild and pursuit that meets all stages of dogs, lamb, chicken meal, guinea fowl formula good for him to eat? It has 35% protein? Or should I consider another brand, and how much protein Is feasible?

Our DDB is allergic to wheat and chicken. Chicken is a common one for DDB allergies, not sure about CCs though. Haven't tried Natural Balance. TOTW and Acana are popular brands, and there's a great thread on here about raw feeding, which I can't do.

Protein levels aren't that much of an issue, what you want to look at is calcium levels (usually anything below 1:5 is OK) and the ratio of ca to phos.

That, and not over-feeding, so for a more calorie-dense food you want to adjust so the pup stays quite lean while growing.

There are plenty of decent kibbles out there, that site I just linked to is very informative.Personally, I am mainly feeding my pup Earthborn large breed adult, grain free and quite happy with it.

Welcome to the forum, BTW. :) If you do an advanced search for "puppy food" title only, there are many, many threads on this topic.

One of my CC's is allergic to processed chicken in food or treats.
My girls get Nutro large breed adult lamb and rice, the youngest is the allergic one and she has thrived on this food.
Two years old now about 125 pounds very tall and slim.
This is probably mostly due to genetics but she is healthy and energetic.

I think any of the Fromm grain free lines are good. A lot of people feed Earthborn too. I used to and then switched to TOTW and then switched back to Earthborn and stopped Earthborn because their poops were mushy grey for some reason for weeks. It wasn't like that when I first fed Earthborn. Weird.

How do you understand the ratio exactly? So say for instance I have a ratio of 1.10% calcium and 0.90 phosphrous... how does that work? I know natural balance is higher, I do not have the exact ratio at the moment since it's not on the bag, but I will get back to you to see if it's ideal.

I think I'll be trying the Fromm dog food. Hopefully it works out! Thanks!

I think the Fromm is probably a better choice than the Natural Balance - the Wild Pursuit dry foods all have chicken in them somewhere, and also lots of pea protein. They're finding dogs are developing pea allergies from eating it daily. And: "Peas belong to the legume family. Legumes are high in phytic acid. Phytates have a tendency to bind calcium, magnesium, and iron in animals and humans."
Peas are ok occasionally, but I don't think they are good to give daily... espeically as a significant protein source.

Ok, I narrowed it down to 3! I'm making another post, but if any of you can help as well I picked the following, why do you choose one over the other, and which one would you prefer? Or if you fed your mastiff pups these, how was the pup on it? Thanks everyone again! I researched all about a cane Corso before I got one to make sure the dog was suitable for me, but didn't realize large and giant breeds make a difference in their food intake!

Royal Canin - IMO poor ingredients

Precise - never fed it so I don't know - has chicken - you dog could be allergic to it

Fromm Gold - has chicken and duck, your dog could have allergic reactions to chicken or all poultry and I don't think Fromm gold is grain free

I know your not too favorable of puppy food, but I found 3 choices that were stated in the product to watch out for their growth, would you pick one of the 3 I chose? Or still go to adult?

Fromm Gold has a grain free one also for large breed, how come you disagree with grain in the food? My vet told me not to go with grain free, but she also doesn't have a mastiff lol.

There have been many accounts of dogs on here being allergic to grains (oatmeal, wheat, etc). I have a mastiff and a shepherd mix allergic to grains. They get very smelly and gunk in their ears, itchy and a greasy coat. My shepherd is very allergic to anything wheat, grains - her neck starts to ooze....so gross.

Fromm Prairie gold has a large puppy one. You may want to check out their entree ones too. I looked at 4 and so far their Ca/Phos #s are close to 1.

Your dog may or may not be okay with grains. Some dogs are fine being fed ol'roy. It all depends on your dog and he will let you know I'm sure.
