I'm still in shock. I thought I was just taking her for a chest x-ray. I believe it started in February, she wasn't feeling well, was lethargic, wasn't eating. Took her to the vet and she only barked at him once, her blood work was mostly normal, white mildly elevated, slight fever. After a round of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories she was back to her old self.
Fast forward yesterday. She is again getting lethargic, off her kibble and her breathing is not right. It got worse at night when she tried to lay down she was almost whimpering. Took her to the vet this morning and he wanted x-ray. We did not do the in Feb because she got better. We had to go the specialist diagnostic hospital. The vet took two films (the fact that she went to two vets offices with not so much as a growl told me how bad she was feeling) and immediately brought her out for an ultrasound. She had a massive pleural effusion on xray that was compressing her lungs so he wanted to get a better look with the ultrasound and do a thoracentesis. I asked if he could draw out enough fluid to give her some relief and he said he would try. Unfortunately it was not just a fluid, it was a very thick puss that could not be aspirated. He said if we started IV fluids and mega IV antibiotics she MIGHT make it to morning, when surgery could evaluate her for a thoracotomy to try and clear out the abscess. He gave her less than a 25 % chance. I couldn't make her suffer any more. I held her and kissed her until she was no longer in pain.
She was THE most amazing dog I have ever had in my life. I love them all but she was my heart. I'll miss you my most beautiful girl.
