Do X Rays of Mastiffs (Hips or Elbows) Cause Unnecessary Harm/Radiation To The Animal

Hello again,I am finally looking at breeders in the USA, breeders of Mastiffs are everywhere and I am trying to narrow the search. One breeder seems very thorough, but says that testing via X-ray is harmful to the dog, or unnecessary. Is this correct? I seem to be emailing breeders and asking the same questions, but I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this? Does anyone breed without testing the parents with X-rays? Is X-ray testing on pups detrimental to their health unless it is an emergency? I have ordered a list of breeders from the MCOA website, just in case my search ends up to be a disaster. I almost fell for a scam the other week, so now I'm checking every possible detail. Any advice, comments, suggestions are most welcome. Thank you for reading and have a lovely weekend!

X- Raying a dog comes with its risk, but more related to the anesthesia than the radiation itself. However, if are going to breed your dogs, the benefits outweigh the risk. Otherwise you risk bringing into the world pups who could go through a lot of pain and might live a very short life. With large breeds x- rays are not that bad of an idea, even if the parents are healthy. Ed and hd are quite common in some breeds and sometime by the time the disease manifests itself the cartilage has sustained enough damage to make it hard to treat or keep under control.

i think if your vet cannot safely anesthetize your dog , you need a new one ........ with that being said i haven't had a dog anesthetized for x-rays in 20+ years , any vet i've gone to has only sedated them ........ anybody breeding dogs that isn't x-raying them and checking their hearts should find another hobby , or a job .........jmo

That sounds like an excuse given to explain why they don't want to pay the expense of getting the x-rays done. As someone who has a dog with congenital bilateral ED I don't believe that a breeder who doesn't everything possible to try and eliminate the chances that puppies they bred will suffer shouldn't be paid for their puppies.

I held my last dog while they took x-rays of his foot (broken/dislocated toe)... he didn't have any sedatives, we just held him, but cradling a 100lb dog on his back on a steel slab table was not comfortable for anyone. We did get the job done, though. :)

I can see where there could be 'discomfort' in getting hips x-rayed (depending on how the hips need to be manipulated for a picture)... and needing to go under anesthesia is a big deal... but... I agree, if you're breeding dogs, this would be low on the 'risk' list - versus infections, c-sections, dead puppies in-utero, and other complications that can happen (not to mention passing on genes for bad joint formation).

i've personally never known anyone who has had a dog die from anesthesia ...... i've had some critically ill dogs anesthetized and they had no problem with being put under ...... unless your doing a pennhip there is no reason to anesthetize the dog anyway .......

sorry to hear that , probably didn't see any symptoms due to his size ...... when you see the figures for deaths due to anesthesia , and i believe it's estimated somewhere around .01% , that is including dogs like your pom , dogs with fatal health problems ......
