Dog bit me, need help.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question but I'll give it a shot:

I have a problem with my dog, it's a Cane Corso, 15 month old male.
Today when I approached my dog he bit me when I tried to pet him and it drew quite a lot of blood, and it hurts a bit even now.
This weirded me out because he hasn't really shown any aggresive behavior prior to this, and I was quite shocked he reacted in such manner.
He's been vaccinated against rabies, so I just got a tetanus shot at the doctor.
Now, my question is : What is the best course of action ?
Should I punish him somehow ? Should I deny him meals for a day ?
What should I do to make this be only a one time event, so that it doesn't occur anymore, because if he does this to someone else he may be put down, which I don't want to happen.

TL;DR Dog bit me, drew quite a lot of blood, what should I do ?

Thanks in advance.

We need more information. What was the pup doing when you approached him? How did you approach him? Was he eating? Was he caught off guard? No you shouldn't punish him. Dogs don't understand cause and effect. He's not going to understand that he's not getting food because he bit you.

Too late to punish and really the only thing you could do is tell him in a stern voice bad and no. Striking or withholding is nothing the dog would understand and could aggrivate the situation even more.
But I would do a vet check if this has never happened before. Get a muzzle before you go. Was the dog eating or did he have something of value close by when it happened?
Was it a fear bite or was he aggressive like an attack bite? No matter what you have a serious problem here that either needs training or a canine behavior specialist to have a look.

I was coming home from school and he was just standing in the front yard, I approached him casually, he wasn't eating, and he wasn't caught off guard.

It was certainly attack bite because he saw me approaching from like 50 meters away, I tried to pet him, and then, bam!. He bit me without any warning or anything.

I'm curious, did you say "Hi, I'm home." Did the dog have an opportunity to hear you as well as see and perhaps smell you?
The reason I'm asking is, you said he was looking at you for about 50 meters, so if he was "seeing" you, why didn't he identify you? It's a stretch, but maybe he's blind or partially blind. Maybe he could hear someone approaching but couldn't make out who it was. Unless there's a medical reason, I can't understand it. Can you break your approach down to explain what the dog was experiencing? Also, what has your relationship been like up until now? Do you normally play with the dog? Are you the dog's owner or is it a parent's or spouse's dog? Is there a sore where you tried to pet the dog? Did the dog seem to recognize you, was it wagging it's tail, did it seem welcoming? There aren't enough clues to formulate an opinion regarding causation, but I'm sure the answers are in the details.

When I was opening fence door I saw and him and called his name, he was just standing there. He isn't blind. My relationship was great with him up to this point, every time I came home from school he'd always wag his tail when I came home and come up to me to pet him. I know it does sound weird and fishy because it would seem like I beat him or treat him very bad, but that is not the case. This is the first time he has shown behavior like this.
