DEL MAR, Calif. - The Helen Woodward Animal Center began its annual surfing classes for dogs at Dog Beach on Saturday.

The initial pack of surfer pups will be the first to ride 10 Surf Dogs Surf Boards that will be donated by SoCal Surf Dogs during a 9:30 a.m. ceremony, according to the center.

The classes, located at 3006 Sandy Lane in Del Mar, feature instruction time with SoCal Surf Dogs and participants are encouraged to enter the annual "Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon" in September.

According to Helen Woodward Animal Center officials, the beginner-level classes are recommended for dogs with limited experience on the beach. It gives them an opportunity to get familiar with the sport.

A more advanced class is also offered.

The classes are approximately one hour each and limited to 10 dogs. The $45 fee includes the use of a life vest and a soft foam surf board.

Officials ask that a ratio of one dog per person be maintained.

Classes are scheduled at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and noon on Saturday, June 29, as well as on July 20 and 27, and Aug. 10, 17, and 24.

All proceeds from the classes and the annual dog surfing competition go toward the animals and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.
