English Mastiff Coughing

My 11 month old English Mastiff that started coughing two days ago . He coughs and acts like he is trying to get something out of his throat . He does not do it all the time just occasionally . I read that it might be him inhaling grass seeds or cottonwood seeds . The cottonwood seeds are flying everywhere . This is the first summer for him with me . Should I take him to the vet or wait it out ?

Has he been wormed recently? I won't go into it but suffice to say, if he hasn't been wormed in a while you could worm him and see if that helps.

If its more likely to happen when he's sleeping, just woken up, or after exercise it could be kennel cough.

I just got back from the Vet . She was unsure of what he has . She said it could be a mild Kennel Cough but said his lungs , temp , and heart are good and clear . She said there was no blockage in the trachea . She gave me some antibiotics and something to stop the cough . I am supposed to give these and call with up date monday .

Sounds like kennel cough to me too, like Ruth said. Hope the pup starts to feel better. BTW, KC is contagious around other dogs.

When Buddha had a cough, it ended up being roundworm. Did the vet check for that?

No she did not . After less than 24 hours Thor is doing better . He coughed up a large amount of Phlegm which the doc said would happen . He does not cough as much when he gets up from sleeping . I just hope this all passes and I get my FUN dog back . Thanks everyone for the help .

This is first time I have had a dog with Kennel Cough . He has coughed up a large amount of "Phlegm" three times now . He is taking a non-cough pill that the vet said would break up the cough . Is the large amounts of phlegm "NORMAL ' or should I be concerned ?

Thor has made a turn for the better . It was not a FUN week . After taking him to the vet thursday , I thought he was getting better . WRONG . Friday he was so sick he did not eat , just slept all day . Saturday was the same as friday plus he had some green snot coming out of his nose . Sunday in the evening he started to move around a bit and I bought some canned dog food to try to get him eat some food . Monday about the same . Today he started coming around because he started to chew on a sock of mine . I never thought I would like him chewing my sock again . He is not fully recovered but doing better . It takes 3 or more weeks to get rid of this . It pisses me off that I paid for a vaccination that did not work and had to pay to get pills to fix what should have never happened .
Just want anyone to know that the kennel cough vaccination is not 100% and it sucks when your dog gets it .
Thank you all for the info and help from Me and Thor

That is so scary, I have actually never been to a dog park. We do have a private one here that you have to show proof of vaccinations and a key to get in but I am still leary of it. How is he doing now? Did he lose any weight?

OH YEA he lost weight . He did not eat anything for two and a half days and the rest of the week very little . He lost at least 91/2 lbs . That was how much he lost when I took him to the Vets on thursday . Friday and Saturday were the days he did not eat anything. In all he lost about 15lbs . He is eating again and playing . He does not have the same endurance when he plays .
The dog park that we go to checks for vaccinations when you pay . It is just my guess that is where he got it because there is a lot of dogs there .

Wow that is a lot of weight to lose. I am sure it will take him a little while to gain his strength and energy back. I don't think I will ever go to a dog park they scare me because of situations like yours. Thank god you caught it my friend lost her Akita to it. Please keep us updated on how he is progressing.
