First Ringcraft

Although Zeus has been in a couple of the TM Club Shows we've never done any proper ringcraft training with him. We didn't get him as a show dog but everyone says he's a good example and we should show him.
I was going to start him a month ago with a view to entering him in a champ show at the end of July. Unfortunately a dislocated kneecap (doggy incident!) put that on hold.
So we took them (Hades came along for the ride) to a local class last night. Unfortunately it was 'match night' but thought I'd have a go anyway. Zeus won the Junior class, woohoo!!
But then while we were waiting for the overall final he took great offence to a red setter. We'd been stood infront of it when being judged and Zeus had never bothered and all night sat across the room he paid it no attention. It was only when the setter was running up and down the room in it's group that he set off barking and trying to lunge at it (the setter was a male too). It's most unlike Zeus to be aggressive with other dogs and it's made me a little worried about going to ringcraft and shows if he's taking dislike to other dogs.
I'm not sure if it was because it was another largish male dog and the running made him think there was some threat, whether he just took a dislike to that particular dog or whether he'd just had enough (we'd been there a couple of hours).
Any thoughts/tips?! Should I persevere and maybe more exposure to this type of environment will help?

Hey lady - my advise would be to put it down to experience and keep on with it. Not every dog likes every dog, it could have easily been the other way around and the Irish Setter took a dislike to Zeus. Exposure is key, its a new environment, new people, new place, new dogs, he will soon get used to it. There have been a few dogs that Mooshi has not particularly liked at obedience and ring craft, oh well, so be it. I've said it before (lots - LOL) you should show him, he is stunning! Of course that is if you want to show him. And congrats on winning Junior, he is a beauty. Kepp up the good work lady, I hope to be able to go and see you strut your stuff at Leeds....remind me of the date please. xx

I think it took me by surprise and the reaction of the setters owner peed me off too. She didn't exactly take it in her stride as dogs just being dogs! Earlier in the night a teeny little pinscher type thing had a real paddy at another dog and no-one batted a bloody eyelid!
I think I'll go to the next class in a couple of weeks and see how we go on. Leeds is Friday 26th July (so could be a problem for you with it being a week day?).

Tell the snooty lady to get stuffed! LOL. I'll see what happens work wise and if nothing serious on then I'll book a holiday day. Keep up ring craft, you'll be fine and I bet ya dollars to donuts Zeus gets placed at Leeds and I will see you at Crufts next year looking green with nerves. hahahaha.

I'd say that he was likely tired and grumpy to add to it. I know Apollo starts acting up the more tired and stressed he gets.
