Flea & Tick Meds --> Hair Loss?

Hi everyone!

Does anyone here have any experience with the "FirstShield Trio" Flea/tick medication causing hair loss? I give Duke his flea/tick stuff one the first of every month, and this month it looks almost as if where it was applied (From the base of his tail up to his shoulders) he's losing hair... particularly on his back. I'm not sure what would be causing this? It's not red and he's not scratching it (i don't think he can reach there), but there's a noticeable amount of hair loss. Anyone else ever run in to this?

At the same time (but probably not related), we've noticed some redness and inflammation on the underside of his tail, right against the anus. He doesn't seem to drag his butt at all, but I have caught him biting a that area of his tail once or twice (not really "obsessively). Any home-remedies to clean that area on his tail in case there's a minor infection? should we get him to the vet and possibly have his "glands" cleaned back there?

Any advice would be wonderful - thanks so much and Happy Monday!

We mainly treat the yard not the dogs. I have always been succesful with this. Only one time did we end up having fleas in the house and on the dogs despite treating the yard and I believe it was when we had cats around our house.

Cats have all but much disappeared and so far no fleas in the last 7 years again. We have 3 dogs.

My older Boxer has hair lose above his butt, I think thats from his age.

As with all flea treatments, they are loaded with harmful chemicals and cause many side effects. I would stop the flea treatment for one month and see if the hair and redness goes away. I would recommend a vet check for the redness near the bum area. You must use Banfield because they are the only one that sells this flea treatment, it's known as Vectra 3D at other stores. First Shield Trio contains a heavy dose of Permethrin and can cause serious health problems for many dogs.

I, personally, think flea treatment is harming the pup. Titan receives no flea treatment.

Thanks for the input - I'll be calling the vet today to discontinue the monthly order for the stuff, I'm reading all of the reviews i can find online and they are all awful. the first month he was fine with it, but I'm not ok with the hair loss or all of the negative reviews. We haven't had any problems with fleas, we have an indoor/outdoor cat who doesn't get treated, we check him regularly, and he never comes home with them. WE'll look in to treating the yard, and we're also looking in to finding a new vet..... I love Banfield's puppy care plan, but somethign just doesn't sit well with me there!!
