Hector's "place" work

I might have to try the canned air with Sage. She is reactive to people, bikes, other dogs, basically anything that moves when we go for walks. Do you spray it when you see him lock on or wait until he tries to make a move to get whatever he's locked onto?

When you see the look before the reaction. For Hector it's the ears up, furrowed brow, and head up and turn towards target while in a heel. Basically when he is distracted and starts zoning in on something else. After the first correction, I didn't even wait for those signs. I corrected him for just looking. He gets pretty freaked out and confused what and where the noise is coming from, but I keep going and tell him to get back in heel. Use short bursts of air and act normal. It didn't take long for him to submit and when I say submit it means he gave up on "trying" anything on another dog. He obediently and quietly heeled.

I suggest you start on a place/mat work in the house and work the door thresholds to place to door many times before you leave the house and then start your walk and carry the pet convincer. Even if you don't use it, I think it's a good tool against loose dogs. It does take some practice at first. My shots were inconsistent the first time I used it. One time I blasted it for too long lol. At first I was using it by his shoulders, but that was too much. It really freaked him out.

Tonight I added more challenges to the place work. I used chew treats and doors as the two biggest distractions. He was already in place for about 5-10 mins. At 00:10 he breaks place when I went for the goodie box. 00:58 I handed out treats to everyone except him. 1:28 open door and front door test. No noise from him - this is huge. The treats were good at splitting his focus. 1:57 - 3:50 treat toss. 2:14 broke place. Some things I wanted to point out is that he likes to take his chew to a private area to eat and will search the house for more after he is done. Another big difference is that he didn't make a peep when I opened the door. 7:25 - 7:55 door test, leash on, and going out of sight. 9:40 grabbed keys, went out the front door and he broke place. 11:17 Repeat failed drill with real set of keys. 11:35 left through the front door and locked it with him seeing me leave and everything. 12:35 Release from place, very excited. 12:50 place command. 13:10 door threshold with no leash - had to body block. 13:30 place command. 13:59 distant down command. 14:16 Release and this time he was less excited, only a bit though. I guess my paragraph breaks didn't work even though it was fine in preview mode. :disappointed:

We went for a short walk today. As we left the porch and got on the street, we were faced with a reactive husky. The husky took no time to lunge and bark. Of course I wasn't expecting this and didn't have my pet convincer with me BUT Hector remembered his lesson earlier this week and all went fine. He got a bit nervous at first, but we just turned around and went to place on the porch. He laid down facing away from the dog. The old Hector would have been posturing forward and pulling and screeching towards the dog. Yeah, the lesson was effective and it stuck.

I sent the boy to his place because he kept being frantic, whining, and following me and I needed to do some training with the other dogs (clipping nails) and for the first time he fell asleep in place. He also cannot go on a walk because he's limping bad on the back right leg because my bf told me he fell down the stairs yesterday. We did go on a short walk because I hadn't known about the fall, but I did see that he was limping. I cooked him up some turmeric paste.

Oh, poor Hector. I hope his leg feels better tomorrow.

I hope Hector is well soon. But why he fell ? An accident or something wrong?
Thanks. Because he is stupid and knocks down the gate upstairs and runs/rolls downstairs when everyone is sleeping. Last time he did that he needed to throw up, but I don't know why he does it at times - perhaps running from his own farts?

I know my old female runs from her own farts. She's scared of her own farts lol. We are going to move the bed downstairs so he doesn't have to use stairs.

Just to update this thread. We did something new yesterday. Working in the front yard while I work Mutt on some recall on a line because he comes only when he wants type of dog. It's also pretty cool that I figured out how to get Hector to hold something in his mouth while moving. We played around with the leash and he did great. Now I know how to get him to hold while moving. The other thing I keep on forgetting is to not cue anything with an "it" word in it because any cue with "it" means find it, always.

In the beginning, there is a loose dog across the street, but he's focused on me so he didn't care about the dog. He breaks his place at 43 secs and at 3:34.

At 6:44, release from place. 7:42 he tries to pick up a leash because he gets so excited so we play with the leash until 8:43 then I place him again at 10:17. Release at 12:30 and place at 13:20 and release at 14:19 and place at 16:54.

At 20:53, person walks by and he doesn't react until Mutt starts barking. I release him at 21:50 and then we just hang out for the rest of the time.
