  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Hello all!

Hello from Wisconsin! We just took our pup to the vet to get weighed....90 pound 8 month old girl! Healthy as an ox! Gosh we love her sooooo much!! Her name is Winifred AKA Winnie. We are interested in any information regarding first heat......we would eventually like Winifred to breed! :p

Welcome to the board? Was your girl bought as a show/breeding prospect? What questions pertaining to heat cycles did you have?

Hi there!

I'm not going to harangue you about your choice to breed, but I do feel you should be as informed as possible.

Winnie's first heat may be a silent heat (may not have a lot of visible signs). At 8 months she may be close to it or she may have already had it. But I would never recommend breeding this young - but you did mention eventually.

We waited until our girl was 2 yrs old. It gave us plenty of time to begin showing her, assessing her conformation, and make sure she was healthy without genetic defects.

And even then after all of our careful preparations & health screening, sometimes things don't go as planned. DDBs can have problems with breeding. Many males are too heavy for the female to support - so AI is needed. Just so you know, DDBs often have c-sections - the pups are very large at birth. Our female, Hanna, needed a c-section for a 'stuck puppy'.

Anyways, glad you like your girl. They are wonderful dogs.

We are from Monroe, which is about 45 minutes south of Madison!:) Never heard of Beldenville?

I will try and figure out how to post more pics! The pics are neverending! These dogs are just too freaking cute and take the funnies pictures! TN Dogues - thank you for the information. I haven't heard anything about "silent heat." Hmmm... that means she may not bleed? Wouldn't that be nice....I can't imagine her liking to wear diapers. I guess all we know is what we have read...I did read that sometimes it takes larger breeds longer to have their first heat? Wonder if that is true. And no....I would never breed Winifred at this time...she's still a my lil girl! I just miss having a lil pup around she's getting soooo freaking big! We have been wanting a dog for a long time...but we haven't been able to cuz we never had the place for one. Eventually the right time came around:) There aren't many DDB around here...small area...so she's a hit everywhere we go!

I'll be the rude one here. There is a lot of money that goes into breeding, just to insure the health of your female, not to mention the health of the pups. There are certain health test that need to be preformed. You really need to show your female to make sure she fits the standard and is not just cute. Then you should research male studs and find one that will compliment or help to correct faults that your female has.

Since you will have the bitch and will be responsible for selling the puppies, you need to become an expert in all things DDB and puppies. You will be the lifeline, usually the first one that the owners of the puppies reach out to when they have a problem. How much to feed? My puppy sleeps all day? Runny poop. He cries all night. ect...

It takes years of owning and researching a breed to do it successfully. I'm not trying to be nasty but breeding is a lifetime commitment not something you do on a whim.

Well...like I said it's just something we've been thinking about...it's not something we'd do "on a whim." Obviously being rude isn't something that bothers you! Geez...

I really thought of it as more as tough love or harsh reality. All the things Angel Bear mentioned are not things people often think of when they think of breeding. It's for the love of the mastiff breeds and wanting to keep these dogs the amazing dogs they are, that people on this forum may not sugarcoat things, especially when it comes to breeding.

Actually we have thought a lot about what she had mentioned..... Don't think it's fair that you people just assume my husband and I are possibly wanting to breed her for whatever reasons... We love our dogue...she's our little girl...you have no idea what happiness it has brought to my family. We would never want to do anything to harm her...
