Hi everyone,

Bo is my 2 year old female bullmastiff. She's always been fit and well but about 5 days ago I noticed this little bump on the top of her head - the next day the hair had fell out of it, later on that day I noticed another bump above her eye. The bump was swollen and angry, again the fur has gone and it has bled. I took her straight to the vet who gave me antibiotics and a steroid cream - no improvement so today they've given me different antibiotics and a different cream. They've tested for dermodex and sarcoptic mange and it was negative, I'm waiting on results for ringworm. Just wondered if anyone had come across anything like this?? She's now got 4 affected 'spots' two by her mouth, the horrible sore one above her eye and the bald spot on top of her head, all of them are different in appearance. Any info or advice would be much appreciated!! Ta Viki image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Do you have Bot flys near where you live?

I don't think so no, we are in Birmingham, England.

She's now got lots of small red pimple like spots on her tummy and front legs. Again a totally different type of spot to the others. I can feel a third vet trip coming on! :( makes me so sad and worried she can't tell me what's wrong and the vets don't really know either :((

What are you feeding her?

Hi,

She is fed on Wainwrights. A really good quality dry biscuits - she's been on that for quite some time and has been getting on really well with it. I supplement her with fresh meat and of course she gets treats but she hasn't had anything out of the ordinary. The only thing I can think of that is different is that I gave her a new plastic/rubber toy last week so maybe she's had a reaction to it - if it were just the pimples I think it'd be more likely but the 4 large spots are so different from one another and have appeared days apart I just haven't a clue.

Wouldn't a vet recognize ringworm? Hopefully the test will come back and identify it, so you can treat it!

Ringworm is a fungus, so it wouldn't respond to an antibiotic...
Coconut oil is an anti-fungal... and might also help the skin fight off the 'thing' on it's own a bit better... it couldn't hurt, in any case. (although I'd check with vet before mixing with any other creams they gave you).

I would certainly hope the vet would recognise ringworm!! Apparently over here it is much more prominent in cats and can often indicate immune deficiencies in dogs. The two vets that have seen her said they didn't think it looked much like it, and all her 'spots' look quite different, the lab can take up to 2 weeks to come back with ringworm results. The antibiotics are for potential infection in the hair follicles they said... So who knows. The redness in the spot over her eye has definitely subsided with the cream which has got antiseptic, anti fungal and anti inflammatory stuff in it but all the spots and lumps are far from gone or what I would describe as going. She doesn't seem to bad in herself luckily, eating, drinking and toilet time all seems pretty normal. Just so frustrating she can't tell me what's up!
