Our 5 month old pup gets 4 cups of food in the am and another 2 cups of food in the evening....he acts like he is starving still after eating 6 cups of food a day. He is not too skinny I think he looks healthy but am wondering if I should be feeding him more food. I havent weighed him in a while but he I think he is probably a little over 60 lbs now. Thanks for the help. Oh he is eating Petsmart's Authority Large Breed puppy food.

The bag of food should tell you what is appropriate for the type of food you are feeding. Daisy is ALWAYS starving and she also gets 6 cups a day 2 cups 3x. If you feed them more than the bag calls for you may be giving them too much of the key ingredients. Also, over feeding a premium food will result in diarrhea. I'm still having the food battle too. I'd like to find something that leaves her satisfied, has everything she needs and gives her solid stool!

Up to 8 1/2 cups? Holey moley. We just switched to Earthborn Holistics (from TOTW) - Knox (100 lbs at 8 months) gets 5 cups daily, and Roux (35 lbs at nearly 4 months) gets 3 cups daily.

I'm not too familiar with that food, but if you're feeding within the appropriate range stated on the bag I guess you're okay. It just seems like so much food (and poo!), even for a young, growing puppy.

That is a whole lot of food. To be quite honest, there's a couple things I want to mention. 1. Being that the food has some rather questionable ingredients. There are several things that you don't want to really see in dog food and it has several (corn, corn gluten meal). 2. It has grains and chicken, both of which some mastiffs have issues with. Yours might not but keep an eye out for things like perpetually loose stool, and extreme gas. 3. You do not need a large breed puppy food, a large breed food or a puppy food. A quality adult or all life stages food is more likely to meet the criteria that a food needs to be allow for slow quality growth in a mastiff pup. Also the better the food, usually the less you have to feed. I mean I'm feeding half what their recommendation is (8.5 cups) on my food for a puppy in the same weight range. My food also has a little more calories so she definitely isn't starving by any means. If you're truly concerned, (whether it's for your dog or your wallet since it would seem your going through a lot of food haha), I suggest switching foods. Keep in mind though you will need to transition between the old and the new.

That's about right with Thor, who likes the Earthborn Holistics :) and I do to less mess.
