How much of a good guardian is the Great Dane really??

I looking for info on various breeds to decide about a new dog, great danes would not exactly be my first choice, but varierity around here is not the best and they actually appeal to me on a certain way, but i was wonderind how much of a guardian or farm dog would it really be, they don´t look like much of a working breed to me. I´ll apreciate any experience you can share. Thanks

I would think most lines are neither working nor guard worthy in this day and age. I'm sure some lines would be fine if you can find them.

I have no experience but from what I've read they seem like the clowns of the mastiff world. Giant goofballs out to have fun. I have met a couple and they didn't seem as serious as my EM puppy.

I just added a GD to my family and he is just a baby so there is no way of knowing what he will turn out like but when I was researching them it pretty much said that they are friendly and sweet. Magnum's dad was the friendliest dog I ever met. I was a complete stranger and he didn't even bark, just leaned on me and hoped for a little love. :)

Like grazefull said most GD are watch dog material only. Due poor and show breeding many are merely shadows of the great hunters they once were. Granted there are danes who are used for work but to have to look HARD. Even so earning trust is another issue. There are breeders who still use Danes on boar, hunt, guardian, and farming. If it's too much of a gamble I'd look at another breed.

My danes Mason and Stone are decent watch dogs. Mason is more watchful and will stand his ground better than Store will. However Stone is far more active and athletic than Mason. Stone has also been doing part time farm work by herding goat.
