Landlord gave me his French Mastiff

Hello, new guy here.

Long story short, my landlord rents out rooms here and works two jobs an hour away, trying to save his home. SO I have been caring for his best friend Cookie. It has been an awesome experience. She is about 5 yrs old, she was also used to breed a few times.

I am moving to be closer to school and when I told my landlord about a place I looked at, he asked if I wanted to take her with me, because he wasn't sure he could care for her, like he wants. I of course said yes.

I think I should get her fixed, as the only reason I would breed her is to keep one for myself and give one to my son. But my thought is, to adopt another as a rescue or whatever. I dont want to deal with selling them off, anyway.

I would like advice on making her a more sociable doggy. She has this thing about dominating other dogs and giving them a nip on the scruff. Especially to nervous small dogs. I have been able to deter cat chasing here, but not without some animal drama. I want to be able to take her on walks by the beach. Should I get her a muzzle? Im not a fan of those.....

Welcome! Is there somewhere you can walk her where there are other dogs but that are not free to bother her, if so walk her there until you know her a little better and can judge her responses better, also how's her fitness levels?

This breed can be very dominant, and sometimes big dogs just dont like smaller hyper dogs. Are there off leash dogs allowed at the beach? How is she with strangers, I know with moose he can be very suspicious of new people and different things. I would take it slow, like Bentley said, so you can see how she is going to behave.

I am pretty keen to her motives, usually, because I have been caring for as my own for over a year now. I believe, that it will be a long course. Pretty cool site!
