Leash training

GAIA

Member
Gaia is 9 wks old. Last night, I put her on a leash to see how she would react. Of course, she did not like it at all. Could you guys give a little advice on leash training, age to begine, progression, etc....I am a football coach and I know to learn anything well, there has to be a progression.

Thanks

Well for starters bring out the treats :)

Without making a big deal about it calmy put her leash on, if she does good give her a treat. Then with a treat nose level show her and call her to walk along side you. As you take a couple steps give her a treat. Continue doing this in short spurts a few times a day. This not only teaches her that the leash means good things but also to walk beside you.

Hope I explained that alright :/

Good Luck!

I would also sign up for a puppy kindergarten class with her. Is a great way to get her out and socialize. Good luck

I always put a leash on my young puppies and let them drag it around the house to get used to the feeling of the leash

I second Cody's comment, puppy clases would be ideal and leash training will be part of them normally as well.

whenever i get my puppies..i have had three(not all mastiffs,..just 2)' i attach a leash to them and let them drag it around the ouse. they pretty much get the idea. then when i have the leash in hand, i call them to me. that way they dont wind up pulling on it. every time they come to me, i give them a treat. now, they all walk really good on the leash. there is always a little slack.

An update....GAIA is doing great on a leash the past few days. Its amazing how much she really wants to please me. We have a couple of other dogs (Border Collie and JRT) but for now, GAIA and i do our short walks alone for training purposes (too many distractions when they are with us). She's doing great Thanks for all the advice.
