Meet Dozer. We adopted Dozer in 2009 off of Pet Finder. At the time, we were told he was a bullmastiff/boxer mix and believed that to be the case his entire life. However, we recently learned about the Boerbeol breed and I'm wondering if maybe we had a boerbeol or a beorbeol/boxer mix instead! (Sorry, I can't seem to find the right way to shift enter and create a new paragraph, so bear with me). When we got Dozer, he was somewhere between 5-8 years old and a total love. You could tell whoever had him as a baby loved and trained him well, but we could also tell that his owner died or gave him up and he suffered for awhile. He came to us with scarred elbows, skin conditions, and a ruptured and scarred over ACL. The rescue told us he had hip dysplasia, but a visit to the vet sure set us straight. We knew we couldn't afford surgery and if we gave him back to the shelter, he might never be adopted, so we kept him. That was the best decision ever because he was the best dog ever! When we got him he was 95 pounds; all skin and bones. We got him to a very healthy 120 pounds and he stayed there until his death last month. He ruptured his ACL again (we knew the day would come) and in order to help reduce the swelling the vet gave him Deramax, which we later learned can be fatal in a small percentage of dogs. Looking at the pictures and descriptions of the boerbeols here, I'm thinking he may not have been a bullmastiff at all. Although he didn't weigh as much as some of the dogs mentioned here, he had the same look; the deep chest, black mask, and tighter muzzle than some of your other mastiff breeds. He was always unfailingly polite to visiters to our home, but was happiest with his family. He rarely barked. The only time he "went after" anyone was a couple of times when some young teenage boys went running past him. I think they made him nervous. He never fought with other dogs, but wouldn't cow-tow to them, either. People were so impressed by Dozer; when we took him to the Independence Day parade, people would actually leave the parade to come and meet him. I miss the dog so much! So, I know it's too late to do any blood tests or anything, but I was wondering if anyone on these forums have an opinion, or can give me another other information to help me determine if Dozer (Big Daddy Doze, Dozimo, Doze-man... you get the idea) was a bullmastiff or boerbeol, and if you think there was any boxer mixed in? Part of why I'm asking is that we loved Dozer's look and temperament/behavior so much that we're hoping to find another dog like him, and we recently saw a boerbeol on PetFinder, which is what made us aware of the breed. That dog looks a LOT like Dozer. Thanks so much!
