When Ron Blake brought Monty, the English Mastiff home Sun., Dec. 22 and started walking him around Liberty, there was unscheduled parade.

People were waving from the their cars and turning their cars around.

30 people and ten kids stopped them to get adoption information.

Blake said, "Good 'ol boys want him because he is bigger than the their neighbor's dog. He is very gentle and very protective at the same time. He is just a loyal dog.

People who know the breed call him the noble estate guardian, 'The lord of the manor'."

Friends for Life is the Rescue Group in Houston responsible for bringing Monty and Blake together.

Blake was checking his facebook one day and a video loaded automatically. The dog started walking across the room at the Harris County pound. He was intrigued enough to read the story. Blake remembers thinking, "Nobody's going to have room at Christmas time to have an animal that size come into their life, but I do."

Monty lived in Virginia and moved to the Woodlands with his former owner. The dog was abandoned and was within 72 hours of being put to sleep at the Harris County pound.

Due to Monty's microchip, the dog won an additional 72-hour reprieve. Blake said microchip regulation requires the pound to attempt contact with the former owners, who apparently did not answer the phone.

During the first two days Ron had Monty, hundreds of facebook notifications showed up on his account. One memorable comment said, "When one dog is rescued, it could lead to one or two humans being rescued."

Blake said, "Sunday afternoon Dec. 22 Monty blitzed into my life. … The large dog came to the rescue group with a bad reputation donned upon him from the former owners. He had been labeled as over-aggressive, but none of that behavior has shown up. He has been checked out thoroughly.

Monty, age 6, weighs 147 pounds and is anywhere between 10-30 pounds underweight. Blake added, "There are only a few dog breeds larger than Monty."

Blake wants to use his experience with Monty to inspire others to adopt animals from Pals of the Pound.

He is especially interested in the English Mastiff breed.

Blake explained, "You must understand my top speed is a mozy.

Monty's top speed is a sub-mozy. I saved Monty's life, and he is changing mine."
