My english mastiff bogart is new to our home. We have only had him about 2 weeks. He doesn't seem to like toys but will fling towels around. When i am sitting down and try to scratch him on the head or pet him, he gets mouthy. In general he knows basic commands, He does respond to a firm Sit command and a down command. It only works 50% of the time though when he gets mouthy. he chews my hand and my arm, almost like im another dog he is play wrestling with. He is so big already that sometimes it frightens me because he will try to get his front leg over your shoulder. He isn't being aggressive, he is trying to play, but with his size he could really hurt me or someone else. I always get him off of me and make him go out to cool down. What should I do? I don't want this behavior to continue. any advice is VERY appreciated. I love him, but this habit is really bothersome.

Um 18 months according to the title of the thread. ;)

Daisy wants to wrestle and get mouthy but I just don't let her do it with me. I'll stuff a toy in her mouth and distract her for a while or put her in her crate with a chew bone for a bit until she calms down. Then when I don't think she will correlate the rowdy behavior with the reward I take her for a walk to tire her out. It is really just excess energy IMO when they get rowdy. My belove will wrestle with her but I'm not into it!

Oh duh... Guess I didn't have enough java when I read this post... My 2 cents...you've had Bogart for 2 weeks and he's a puppy. Patience...patience...consistency...consistency... Ditto to what Dawn posted...distract...give Bogart another choice to chew on instead of your body.

Bogart will get there...

Thanks guys. That's pretty much what I've been doing and its slightly improved. I named him after Humphrey Bogart. His original name was boo-boo which is awful for a big manly dog lol.
